House decorations are separate and if you are playing the normal version currently have no impact on anything other than to be decorative.
There was an event where I had no choices and had to accept villagers were not happy or something F to accept it brought the mood down 10% and my wife's mood never went back up. Most of the villagers stayed like that as well until winter set in and now slowly they are returning to happy.
Adding it states a fisherman needs a knife there is 30 stone knives in the resources chest. and one in the fishing hut 2 chest. Have validated files still no good.
For mood:
In the current public version of the game, mood is influenced by:
- Skill level in the current profession
- Type and quality of the house she lives in
- Married yes/no (okay, that's kinda stupid considered we're talking about your wife, isn't it)
- Child yes/no
- Sufficient supply of basic needs (food, drink, firewood)
If one of the above points is not fulfilled or only insufficiently fulfilled, this is reflected in a lower or decreasing mood. For example, changing from an occupation with a high skill level to another occupation with a low skill level will lower the mood.
Furthermore, there are some "events" (events that take place at the change of seasons) that can also have an impact on the mood - sometimes positive, sometimes rather negative...
All this applies not only to your wife, but also to the mood of all the inhabitants of your settlement.
Then there is your wife's affection for you - this is the value that must first be increased to 100 before the wife is ready for marriage. This affection will continuously decrease in the course of time, and there is nothing or very little you can do about it.
I imagine that talking to the woman regularly slows down this process. For example, I ask my wife once a day how things are going in our little kingdom. This question also has the small advantage that the wife will tell you if something goes wrong, such as damaged buildings, too little food, too little water, craftsmen need resources or tools, etc.... Moreover, at least in my opinion, the daily conversation slows down the loss of affection. If not - well, at least I have made her feel valued.... ;)
Another way to increase affection is bringing her gifts.
However: you can only give the wife a gift once a season and not every gift is received with equal delight by the spouse. Note that the gift has to match the wife's personality (the personality will be displayed directly when talking to your wife if you have the "Empathy" skill in your personal skill tree in Diplomacy).
For example, a "busy bee" will not be very happy if you give her a bottle of expensive wine, while a "snob" or "princess" will most likely be more negative about a pincushion. The key here is to find the best gift for your wife's personality, so that you can achieve the highest increase in her affection.
To cut a long story short, don't neglect your wife and give her a treat every now and then, and love will never fade. If only it were that easy in real life...
That was once again much more text than I had actually planned. I hope I was able to help you. If you have any further questions - feel free to ask. :)
Oh, and one more thing: the upcoming inheritance update has one or two changes in store for your wife, too, so there are good reasons to look forward to it... ;)
I always ask her every morning how our kingdom is going and I noticed her happiness had drop to 99 and it stayed on since the event so I buy her a gift when it gets to the current.
I sacked a fisher villager that was needing sleep, my wife is 100% now happy but still shows a red down arrow.
I'll see how it goes.
everyone got happier after I helped this villager fisherman get more sleep you know time off. I mean is that spooky lol.
Oh I also had a bath might have helped :P

Depending on her personality, her preferences differ.
Don't give a diamond to someone with simple expectations, this would drop her affection rating, go for a coverlet or similar.
So it was before any gifts but a good thought..
The order of things I did.
I bought a gift to see if it would remove the red down arrow. Now its seems to have stabilized on 100% happiness but the red down arrow is still there..
Removing the angry fisher also helped the village believe it or not.
So far everyone is returning to a good happiness even wife with her red down arrow.
Its crazy.
So I am thinking is there a log or a file I can delete seems maybe a script is damaged or corrupted as validating game files doesnt change it.
My only recourse if the red down arrow doesnt eventually go away is go back to before the event happened.
A have built a lot since then lol.
Mood always goes up and down until you have tweaked everything to a balance in your settlement.
Personally I only achieve this when I have a population of around 100/120, all productions automated, houses upgraded and a good supply of food. Then I can relax and enjoy beautifying my village and usually moving some of my buildings to better locations so my settlement looks more realistic.
How do you approach the game? it would be nice if players gave some details on how they build their settlement to give everyone the opportunity to better build their own.
There are no particular challenges in this game, it is all about building a settlement and this is the kind of game I prefer.
I've just uploaded it so the format may not be fully rendered from SD.
Usually takes a day.
Forgive the quality . I've only played 150 hours so still early days as population is only around 31 but there is lots of kids maybe all indoors in this video as it's winter lol.
I'll do more later on.
See the red down arrow on wife she is happy 100 % it doesnt go down.

Jaunitta, I'm happy you shared this video as I finally know by now that you actually mean "affection" when you're talking about happyness xD. Thats the point I was unsure about since you opened this topic.
If you look at this screenshot which I took from your video, I marked the "affection" with a red rectangular. The actual "happyness" is what's called "mood" in this game.

Again, for both see my comment above about how they work in the game and what possibilities you have to increase them. This might become interesting once the heir update made it to the public version of the game.
I have always bathed everyday.
I appreciate your asistance, I learn everyday :)
oh well its just annoying.
side note
As for the staging tester I do not like what I am seeing with our charactor a friend has made it known to the developers and he says it is a bug and they fix it.
I made this comparison oh goodness they are so different.

If you already made your wife a gift, so she's on 100% affection again,
the arrow-symbol will disappear at the next season-change.
That should keep her affection higher.
Happiness? Hmm, some of my villagers are always around 40+%. Don't know how to make them happier.
I just started a new settlement exactly where you have yours. I have done several villages before all around the map and this last position is my favourite so far.
Did you positioned all your buildings from the start or have you moved some later in your game?
I like the position of your extractor and herbalist away from your village centre.
It is nice to decorate homes and do so myself, but contrary to what Dovesong mention in his above post, decorations do not affect happiness, only insulation on stone houses with best roof have effect on happiness.
Building houses close to mine for your miners do not change production.
Beside those, Dovesong suggestions are quite relevant to me.
I hope to see more on the subject by other players.
