Villagers don't drink? How do i tell them to work my field?
Still a beginner here, trying to figure it out.
I recruited some villagers and it says they have no water although there's a well right in the center of my "village". Do i need to do something to make them drink?
Another question i have : when i go into the management tab of the barn, there is no option to make them produce cabbage or carrots althoug h i heve plenty of seeds.
The only option i have are producing poppy seeds and other kind of seeds but none of the plants i already have seeds for.
Also, i assigned a villager to the well, had one empty bucket in the barrel near the well, now the bucket is gone and nowhere to be found. Is it in my worker's inventory? Will my worker store the bucket somewhere?
So much things are poorly explained in this game

First there are many pop-ups that help guide you in the game, there is a whole knowledge tab with a load more information.

Your villagers take food and water from a food storage. If you don't have one you will need to put food and water in their house chests. Water needs buckets or waterskins. Empty ones need to be in the Resource Storage for a well worker to use them. When full they go to the food storage, once consumed empty ones back in the resource.

When you have an item selected look at the bottom part of the screen. It shows you where an item should be stored. It will be either the resource or food storage.

Planting is done via the field management tab not the barn. Select your field and on the right hand side you set what crop to plant. This video shows how to do that at about 1 minute in. It's a great video but some info is a bit out of date in it now. How to set up the fields isn't. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2C7c3j4Cd4&t=8s

- Your villagers will not take water directly from the well, they will take it from the food storage. I'm assuming you set up production for your worker at the well? If you did, the worker will fill the bucket and put it in the food storage. I don't know how many workers you have, but if you only have 1 bucket it will be drunk immediately. When the bucket is empty, it goes into the resource storage where your well worker will take it again to fill it. The solution to your problem is to make many more buckets.

- There are 2 different type of workers for the barn. A barn worker who does the thrashing, the making of fertiliser, animal feed and daub and make flour and stuff. The other worker you need to assign is a Farmer. They will work the fields for you. The will fertilise, plough, sow and harvest your fields. For them to do this, you have to assign crops to your fields first and put the tools (a hoe, a bag and a sickle or scythe) they need into the resource storage.

*edit* Too slow again!

Thanx, it is starting to make sense. I have another question though, is there a workplace where the assigned worker will gather sticks and straw? I assigned a worker to the workshop and told him to make bowls and torchs and torchs need both those ressources.

Woodshed (I or II) + worker.

Sticks from the woodshed, straw from the extraction shed.

And, of course (in vast amounts), from farming wheat, rye or oats.

Farming AND threshing - just to have it said. ;)

And lets not forget actually harvesting it first :steamhappy:

And and,

yeah, that'll do Mark.

I'm actually a little flummoxed about the 'well' situation. I have a villager assigned to the well and had the well set at 50% buckets and 50% waterskins. I had 40 buckets and 40 waterskins. After a few seasons I get a notification that the well needs resources. I look in the Food Storage and there are 40 full buckets and, of course, no buckets in Resource Storage. So I have to grab 30 buckets, empty them and put them back in Resource Storage. I added 20 more buckets and eventually had the same thing happen. So, do I need to assign a villager with a rotten 'Excavation' rating to the well? I guess I wish there was a way to make the well worker a part-timer or something. I have 70 villagers, but I guess they don't drink much water.
Bit away from the original topic - but, yes, I too find getting the well worker adjusted to usage is difficult, keep tweaking it but never seems to balance quite right - after a few seasons either I run out of empty buckets or out of full ones. You could make them part time - say one season on well (winter) and the rest farming see how that works out. The other problem is buckets for cows milk. If you leave them in resource storage they likely all get filled with water. I have to keep some buckets in the cowshed.

I would check your people demand control and check that you haven't stopped them using buckets of water as a water source.

I haven't stopped any of my villager access because, aside from the water issue, things are working very well. I currently have 100 buckets. On a daily basis, I generally have 10 or 15 milk and 10 or 15 sour milk and sometimes I help the kitchen with making cheese (which, I believe, is bringing in the big bucks from my market.) I keep a steady stream of Potage, Stew, Meat with Gravy, soup, etc. which my villagers tend to consume. I think I'm going to take Mark's suggestion and send my Water Carrier over to help out in the barn. It's just that I hate that red notification on the top left (blame it on my OCD.)

I never put a worker on the well either. At the beginning of every season I just do it myself.
