None of the villagers in the valley are smart enough to build or repair carts. If they learned enough to start building carts then they will want more money. Next thing you know they will want unions, demand paid vacations, education for children and health care. It's bad enough they get free food and housing for life and mothers get 2 years maternity leave every time they have a child.
The best possible method is to build a storehouse where you typically need to move large quantities. Since they are all linked, it serves as a benefit to giving you additional storage and additional access. I just name them as outposts.. and I usually keep a storehouse near Denica Hornica and the mines up near baronwhatever... between those 2 close cities. Throwing up a food store isn't a bad idea near the cities you frequent as well.
It's less important now with fast travel. But I find it's much more pleasant to have many little cities with their own set of families... rather than 1 giant metropolis. I set my days to 6 and spend 1 day working, and 1 day traveling each city. You also have a good reason to explore all the beautiful and neat little areas the game has to offer this way.
