Fishing Hut can't find Perch on a Perch spot
So what am I doing wrong here? I built a fishing hut near a perch spawn location in a lake, put knives in the tool box and they're recognised as being there... but the hut does not seem to recognise the presence of the perch in the production queue. Am I just not close enough to them? The spot is a little way offshore, but I thought the hut should be able to cope with that. Any ideas please?

The fish spawns help you find the fish you want, they do not matter for the fishing hut. Your NPCs will always bring in fish meat. Only you can catch the individual fish.

The options you are seeing that use for example perch are so you can tell them to take the whole fish you caught and turn them into fish meat.

Ohhhhh, ok I see. So I have to catch the perch myself and place it in the chest as well as the knives. The hut workers will only ever catch plain fish using the fishing spear? Fair enough. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Thats quite misleading in-game though. When there are specific fish spawn spots on the map and recipes in the fishing hut production management that require those fish the logical conclusion to draw there is that you can set the hut to catch those fish if you place it on the right spot. I think maybe this needs to be explained better in-game.

Are perch needed for anything? Usually what you do with the fishing lodge is make fish meat (the top option), which the worker does by spearing whatever fish happens to be in the vicinity. For this you need to provide fishing spears, not knives. Perch and other types of fish cannot be eaten by villagers.

However, if you have caught a lot of perch, roach or pike yourself, you can get your fishing hut worker to turn them into fish meat, and that is what the bottom three options are for.

You can use the fishing nets to catch whole fish. The different sized nets catch different sized fish. The nets can be placed any where in the water. They do not need to be near a specific fish spawning location. (although personally I find the nets to be expensive in terms of resources and often seem to skip %'s so I get less use out of it than I would expect. That is, I'd expect it to drop 1/3 of % points every time it's full of fish (ie 100% to 66%), but it would reach 0% before I've cleared it for the third time.

You can also buy whole fish from one of the vendors.

I found that my fisher gained more experience converting whole fish to fish meat than catching fish 100% of the time. Whilst I didn't do an indepth analysis of how much fish they could catch at 100% vs converting whole fish to fish meat to see if there was an ideal balance I remember it seems close enough to make it worth the while hauling whole fish cross-country to get them to chop them up.
