how do you usually go about picking a spot to settle?
title, what things do you take into consideration? i'm trying to find a good place to build a village, but it seems difficult to find a decent a spot. the placement of villages and mid game resources seems like it really limits your places, not to mention rough terrain also messes with building placement

You can build pretty much anywhere. Only farmer needs to be next to the fields to work and you can build a small village next to a mine. All other jobs don't need to be next to the resources.

so instead of one mega village, you've built stuff all over?

Close to water, flat land and forests. No need to settle near a mine since the miners will work the mine and the ore appears in the resource storage. I have 2 mines over 500m away with no other buildings there. Rough terrain forces us to be creative. I'm glad terraforming isn't part of the game.

I pick spots that look pretty. Terrain and other features make absolutely no difference, as working with hills, mountains, dips and lumps are the things that make a village interesting. You honestly can't go wrong no matter where you settle. The single factor that may or may not matter to you, is being in a far corner of the map. Some people hate legwork, others don't mind. If you're the former, somewhere near the center of the map is a good choice.

I had started over due to the release and I went to a different spot, if you are not critical about everything being in a certain spot, or a certain way, you can go to places that you can have your place spread out, or there are some very flat areas, I have one, and the one I had before was very flat, it was close to everything that I needed to be near, only the first village you go to when you first start was far, but it really didn't matter, I was close to the other ones. If you look at the map, you will see a loop to the far left on the same side of the river as Gostovia, (finally remembered the name, lol), and on the other side of the bridge is the Tiki something place that sells the donkeys, check there follow the river with it being on your right and you can go a ways down and you will see a lot of flat area. If you want it to be around a lake like area, there are places like that as well, just go along the roods, just be careful about getting off the roads without weapons. Good luck, and have fun.

The flat areas north and northeast of Denica are hard to resist ... fields can be very close to the barn and houses.

I set up between Gostovia and Denica since it was pretty, along the main road and gave me quick access to Gostovia where it seems most of the story quests are based out of.

You can build anywhere but the villages and your villagers will walk to wherever they have to go (technically, so long as it's working hours and there are villagers assigned to jobs with appropriate tools, the buildings produce goods...it's not directly based on the actions of the villager in-game).

One thing to note: your buildings will block spawns. I accidentally blocked the deer spawn near my village and had to go hunting somewhere else for a season before I realized what was going on. lol You have to sort of guess based on what blocks animal respawns.

Oh, and of course, resource and food storages need to be in range of production buildings and houses. So, you can effectively create little villages of your own (i.e. a couple houses, a couple of production buildings, a resource, and a food storage) wherever you feel they should be to get access to the right resources.

building a big city center then small villages spread about seems pretty cool to me

Yeah, I'm at a point where I'm trying to decide where I might want to do that very thing. I've built out the various caves into mines but haven't assigned anyone to most of them yet. I've placed resource stores near a couple so I may strategically set up a couple houses, food stores and additional production buildings to make them worthwhile (logging, hunting, herbs).

The only thing is you have to run around maintaining those places but that's a great excuse to wander, visit the NPC villages, etc. Once you get a horse or a donkey, it's much easier to do this.

I have settled halfway between Rolnica and Leanica at the extreme left limit of the map.
First game and for now i just have two houses, hunting and wood building

i set up next to the lake sw of Gostovia. feels like wilderness without being super far away, lots of trees, water and wildlife. wolves have been a pain though.

i'm settled at the location before the three falls, both side of the river but no lakes for fishing near my village. (I wish we could build bridges, gonna just place some planks... xD)
It has a great plain for farm, and abondance of materials. close to gosto and hornica.

I think between gosto and denica would be a better strategic point ++ near a lake.

For me
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2683939312

* Near the starttown (you need to visit often during the quests)
* In the middle of the 3 Farmer trader
* Relative near one of the Smiths
* Deer Spawn nearby
* Enough relative flat Area

seems like a lot of people settle near the starting town for quests, which to me seems like it could be restricting? maybe the game should implement a messenger system i wonder

Pretty much how I do it.

I have a small hunting/gathering/logging village near the mountains and deep in the woods, a few small farming/ranching villages, one for getting clay (usually has some kind of basic food production), one for mining (again, usually has some kind of food production also), and then my main one handles most of the major crafting and trading (sometimes it'll have small farms and orchards near it for the crap skilled people).
