I like a challenge but this feels more like an abstract time puzzle.
Till you get the clothes, torches hold you warm, keep in mind, the cold debuff needs time to get away in relation to the time you aren´t warm, don´t wait to long to warm you.
The season length is okay. I play with 3 days, its depends on your own playstyle.
Then I made a second gameplay with more challanging settings because now I know how and what I have to built to survive without stress and frustration.
Also buying your first set of winter clothes is a sensible option.
