Village Layout I Really Like
Start with a 7x5 field. This becomes the defacto court yard. (7 runs N-S.)

Put roads on all sides of the field.

On the East side: Sewing (NE) beside Smithy (SE): both face c/yard.

On the West side: Barn: face c/yard

On the North side: Main Storage: face c/yard

On the South side: Food Storage: face c/yard

Ideally, the extra fields are behind either the Barn or the Food Storage. Housing is behind Sewing & Smithy. Tavern adjacent to Housing and Food Storage.

On the road to the Saw Mill, out of town in whatever direction, I would put the Hunting Lodge half way. Workshop opposite. Since you can make arrows in the Smithy, I find the Hunting Lodge almost redundant. Workshop products are heavy relative to sale price, making transporting long distances for sale less attractive, so except for making wooden bowls I hardly ever use it.

The courtyard concept appeals to me because it seems I'm constantly fetching raw materials to build to craft or plant or transport for sale. In this design all the storage boxes for raw materials and many finished goods are close at hand.

I know others prefer a village design with the Tavern at the heart of it. Interested in other's opinion.

Well, every one have their own dreams.. My preference is a blackmith,a woodshed and water and a food storage in center around my house.. Then I am happy every morning..
Cheers,

Me I found that too modern rural city, I prefer more in harmony with the land, nothing is aligned, more inspired from medieval picture of villages. Its probably less efficient if the npc's would have to walk to the storage to get there goods but it's a style.
Why must all buildings be in line and in square?? I mean, if you really lived in a world like this, who cared about alignements? The people were happy if they ever manage to build a chicken house at all! No problem if it was not "aligned" with your house!.. :steamhappy: Relax and build it the way it fits in.. no worries..Let's do it the way we feel is right! Who can complain?

We just love our village just the way it is..square or not square..no streets, no 90deg-angles..it will become what we like..who cares about that when we have enough food and resources?

For me I want a village where my houses are in one area. No they don't have to be lined up but just not all over the place. My fields in an area away from the houses with the farm animals somewhere in between. The more industrial buildings (smithy, sewing, etc.) away from the fields with the resource buildings in between them. The tavern and stables will go next to each other close to the road so wandering travellers don't have to walk through the entire village to get a drink lol. Any other building that require being placed outside the village can go anywhere they need to be :)

Nobody is Tavern obsessed. OK

I preferred my town with a tavern as a center where they can socialize before and after work
