I saw rot or spoil while hunting. Maybe it comes from wounded animals?
Rotten food hasn't been a great way for me to rely on fertilizer so far. Cheaper to make some knives for selling and purchasing it.

Thanks both, just glad there's a way for me to obtain it if my food doesn't spoil!

When I started farming, I actually bought rot from venders since it's free. I'm not sure if you're still able to do that with food spoilage turned off, but might be an option still. Otherwise, yeah the above. :)

i think you droped berries, mushrooms or meat to decrease your weight/reorganized your inventory in a season before. Theres no random rot.

What I do, I gather around 500 berries (Unripe/Ripe) then I drop them on the ground next to my house, on the last day of the current season, when I wake from the night sleep I have a lot of ROT. Then take that up to your Barn (IF your that far into the Skill Tree) and convert the ROT into Fert..
If I remember, I think it's 10 Rot to 10 Fert. but, you have to have at least 10 Rot to make Fert.. Why I collect and Rot Even #'s of Berries ( or whatever food source you like) I just find gathering Berries a lot simpler than Mushrooms, meat, etc...

It's not that hard to get the barn either.. It can be done in less than 15 mins..

Example:
I make (2) 6x6 fields next to each other, road/path separating them, for looks only. I then make (2) Hoes, as 1 field of 6x6 will take aprox 75% of a single hoe, so 2 is needed.
I then Hoe the 2 fields and that should be enough to unlock the Barn, then start using your Rot to make yer Ferts in said Barn..

Hope this helps..

:ht_beer: Cheers

Its 10 rot to one fertilizer.
Berries are fast and easy to collect in high mass. Its spoils 1:1 in rot, like mushrooms. Meat spoils to 3 rot. carrots, onions and beetrot in 2, cabbage in 4. You can get from one cabbage field 8-12 cabbage an 0-4 seeds. So its an easy way for grown your own fertilizer productions with cabbage. I collect only for first 1-2 seasons berries, after than its done with cabbage till the pigs come.
I drop it in front of the workbench in the barn.

Those who are selling seeds etc.
Only since experimental version 0,5 tho. Before that, you can only buy fertilizer. Or pigs...
Anyway, vendors are selling like 30-40 rot per season which is 3-4 fertilizer... not much.
I am planning to go BIG in farming, already having more than 3000 field tiles. No way pigs can feed that many fields with manure (due to building limit). So i guess rot will be my main source :D

Btw. in the long run... how can Pigs be efficient source of fertilizer anyway??
They cost money, they require building space (1 building per 5 pigs), they need one worker per one pigsty while producing... 5 manure (2,5 fertilizer) per in-game hour.
That is some really low number that is good only for games with longer seasons (where you plant less but pigs can produce more manure between harvests)... or?.

My plan is to actually get orchards, cheapest ones, cherries, they are cheaper than pigs, dont require anything, not even a fertilizer and orchards dont even drain build limit. Then, cherries will rot, producing fertilizer. More expensive investment but considering all pros... i dont really want to buy pigs :D

Pigs are very good to produce fertilizer. Its one manure per skillpoint and pig, If you make fertilizer with barn workers, they skill very fast. And a skill 10 brings 100 manure per day and pig. I have everytime only one couple of pigs. You get up to 3000 fertilizer per year (60 fertilizer per pig and skillpoint). One pig eat 24 food per year, thats easy to produce (its only 2-3 fields with rye and oats). Its beside the hunter and fisher the way to produce fertilizer that raise with the skill level of your workers.
And you can sell the breeds.

In test branch this still happen. Farm vendors (the one with the wheat logo that sell seed) give away free rot. Very good to get a little extra fertiliser for free

So just to clarify for my brain and maybe the OP as well.

If you have turned off food spoiling will food dropped on the floor still turn to Rot at season change?

I only ask because food turning to Rot is food spoiling big time.

No, if you turned off food spoiling it won't decrease it's status, no matter where you keep it and for that reason it also won't change to rot, even if you keep it outside of any storage chest.
But either of you would have been able to figure this just by trying it - take some food, drop it anywhere on the ground, wait for the season change and see what happens.

I get 9.6 manure per hour from my pigsty. That is plenty for farming... and still need to sell it. I don't have 3K field tiles, but I am pretty close to 1K.

Yea, it seems once i levelup my pig farmer, i should get more than enough fertilizer just from a single pigsty.
