They are working now sorry about my post stating otherwise.
All workers start producing at 8 am, no matter where they, the work building or the ressources (trees, animals...) are. They put all stuff in the ressource/food storage and take all they need from there.
Only fieldworkers have to do their job in physical way.
If you're like me though and you don't want to see your miners walking miles to the mine only to turn around as soon as they get there then build a small mining village at the mouth of the mine. Then you can have your main village and your mining village, the location of your storage buildings won't affect anything. Just be sure to always put those female miners back in the mine after motherhood.
Well frick, I had 25 tools for each workshop I had at the time with stone tools in my resource storage building and after getting NPC's recruited to my village it was saying I had no tools for the workers after assigning them to work.
They started working after I put the tools in the workshop chest and this is why I said it was not working but now with Iron tools they are taken them out of the resource storage building.
