When you build a fence around a pen with a gate, animals will stay inside.
You don't even need to lock the gates, animals simply can't walk through them.
Doesn't need to be that wide - but shouldn't be too close either... xD
Best is you just try it for yourself and see where it goes. :)
We've tried it hundreds of hours with all possible kind of animals during the closed beta and I've never seen what you describe even once.
If you can repeat it in your game you possibly ran into a bug. If so, it would be nice to upload your save so we can have a look at it.
You just gotta play around a bit and try to confuse their "pathing AI"
These chickens stay inside the property even though there the opening beside the house. It's far awayu enough that they stop 'pathing' around the fence.

A similar situation here. The opening isn't too far and clearly within their roaming range, but somehow has stopped these geese from using it. Width of the gap might also have something to do with it.

I didn't say it's impossible.
It's just - we did our best to get rid of possible bugs before release, so I'm very interested in seeing a save where this actually happens. I also always look at my own animals, but these tend to be nice and stay where I want them to be: inside their fenced area. ;)
So, I'm serious about this: if you happen to see this in your game again, please give us access to your save. Would be very helpful to see if there's a bug and also how to fix it.
Thank you. :)
What the heck is the point of having gates if even wild animals can get through them? >_<
I beg the creators to fix it so only humans can use gates!!
And if there was a choice to lock the gates for everyone not living in my village, that's be even better, considering the possibility of bandits.
But seriously...
My people need to walk in and out of the village somehow.
But wild animals should not.
Any ideas how to make this happen?
Between bandits and wolves, I find this would be something ALL settlements in the time and place this game is set in should have.
Considering you will be playing you heir if you die, this is kinda important.
And choosing which if your children that will be heir could be good for the same reason. But I admit to the logic of it being the first-born son if the aim is authentic medieval laws.)
Please don't necro very old threads because it's confusing for the reason landersbleam mentioned. Just make your own.
If you fence of the entire animal pen with no gaps, then your animals won't use the gate and will stay in the enclosure.
There is a guy (randomly chosen from your male villagers) walking around at night with a torch around the perimeter of your village. It doesn't do anything as you don't get attacked, but it's nice for visual immersion.
As for naming children; once you take over the heir in the Oxbow, you get the character customisation menu again and can change appearance and name.
And you as the player and your entire downwards line are only able to get one child, so there is no need to choose who the heir is.
Locking this again to prevent confusion. If you have questions and suggestions, feel free to start your own thread.
