how important is it to build a colony near clay or stone?
for later buildings, I am assuming you need mines and clay - but can you just trek to get them or do you need to have resource gathering buildings that are close to a source?

Stone and clay can be gathered by your excavation hut workers. Stone can also be gathered in mines.
You will need a lot of stone later on, specially for the most durable houses or stone walls.
Clay not so much. You might want to make some Daub to upgrade walls, or skip that entirely and go straight for log / stone.
You will need some clay if you wish to produce and bottle alcohol, and/or decorative clay items.
However the amounts you need can easily be gathered even by a low skilled villager.
Theres no need to restrict your town location, unless you want to be gathering these things yourself. Even so, eventually you can just use your mount. Your excavation hut doesn't need to be close to clay pits, nor does your village.

Damn, now I am going to start over.

I built on the banks of the river, opposite and West of Godovia. I scouted out earlier in EA the Clay pits. I built a road straight from my house to the clay pits - this way I would not forget where they are.

However, after a while I realized that building in the forest is neither aeshetically pleasing, nor is it very flat.

I was told two things in these forums at one point:

1- If you build a exactracting station it can take "The end of your workers shift before they get there. Is that true?
you said I can build the stations, but are they more efficient closer to the resource?

2- If you build a storage bin just outside the resource, you can mine it yourself in a shared storage. My main reason for concern here is the AI may not understand this and start to bring things to the shared storage/go there to repair it and end up getting caught in a loop (every day they leave the village to get there to repair the building, every day they don't make it and get stuck/return home).

Are either of these true/concerns?

I am thinking about building West of Godovia where I originally built in EA because it is super flat. Any other location where you can have it all? flat land, clay, mines, water, reeds, etc?

Lastly, about shared storage: do I just need one, or eventually will run out of space and need to build more?

1- It doesnt matter if your worker takes the whole day to reach the mine, them walking there it's just an animation for visual purposes, Ore/stone will be mined from 8:00 AM, regardless if the worker is already there or not. Distance really doesn't matter.

2- If you want to have a Resource storage built right by a mine/ clay pit, that's up to you, but like i said before not really necessary. It doesn't affect anything the NPC's do.

Storage space is shared across all storage buildings. This means:
-when you open a chest in any of the storage buildings you see the same items inside, anywhere on the map.
-If you have a Storage 1 (1000kg capacity) and a Storage 2 (2000kg) your total storage capacity is 3000kg. When you open any of the storage chests you will always see xxxx/3000kg.

You will probably need to make more than one eventually and/or upgrade your older versions.
I currently 8000kg of storage on a 78 Building village w/ 93 population. I only run it at half capacity, but thats because i take stacks of logs and stone and drop them on the storage floor

Wow, thanks.

1 -Some follow ups. I was told that the limit was 40 buildings - its 80 now? or did you have to fiddle with the settings at the start of the game?

2 - So, let's say I want a mine. What do I need to build to get stone and salt for my houses and food? I am building in the valley now between the two villages but I could easily be convinced to abandoned this game and start where I genuinely wanted to live in the first place if I know I can get easy access to stone and clay next time.

3- I see your avatar is Kingdom Come, and obviously that is a huge inspiration to play this game. I never got very far in the game because of the fidgety way combat/lock picking worked but I want that depth of story and player choice (that Kingdom Come promised). How is the part where you get to build your own village? is it nearly as deep as this one or very basic?

I am really looking for Crusader Kings 3 but in First Person, lol.

1. I can't remember the default max number of buildings in the current version, but I think it's more than 40. In any case, when you start a new game there's an option to double it.

2. To gather stone yourself, the easiest thing to do is just pick single stones off the ground. Depending on where you are, you can pick up 200+ stones in a day (but they take a while to respawn). You can also mine small rock deposits with a pickaxe (they only give a few each), or mine the ore deposits in caves (there's only a few cave locations, mainly in the mountains to the north and south of the big river). However, the best way to get stone in quantity is to build ax excavation shed and hire an NPC to work it (the shed can be built anywhere, location doesn't matter). I would suggest not going heavily into stone construction until you have the excavation shed set up, because early on you will have an ongoing need for stone for tools.

Similarly, for clay, you can take a shovel and go dig in clay pits, or have the worker in your excavation shed gather it. Clay isn't terribly useful, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Salt is completely unnecessary; its primary purpose is making salted meat, but there's very little reason to do that beyond role-playing. Putting your food in the food storage building will preserve it sufficiently for all practical purposes.

I subscribe to what Philtre said.
-Building limits: I have set up this playthrough to 200% buildings cap, so my limit is currently at 130 buildings. I have now 80 buildings and have notice a little drop in FPS, let's see if my PC will handle the maximum cap. On a lower end system i would probably recommend leaving the default.
-Location: just chose the spot where you want your village to be looking best, don't worry about resources or logistics because it's possible to build anywhere. The only thing is that for the story line quests, if you're too far from certain villages you'll be walking around a lot. Get a donkey asap.

About point #3 - Yea i know for a lot of players the combat system in KCD was difficult to master. There are however a few mods that can help and make your life easier. The story in KCD was very engaging and a true masterpiece, and it is worth putting in the effort to figure out combat just so you can experience finishing the story line. About the village building DLC, in my opinion it is really not worth it. It's very simple, there's no depth to it, and it has very little influence on the rest of the game. The Band of Bastards DLC is really fun, so is "A woman's lot". "Treasures of the Past" can make your life in combat easier because it gives you access to some of the best armour right from the beginning.

I could talk about KCD all day but this is the wrong forum for it :)
