Newb Questions - simple (Should I build a house close to starting area)
Should I build a house close to Gostovia to do the initial quests, and then later move it to where I want a permanent village? as many early quests seem to be focused there - less walking.

any problem with leaving it there?

How long should I set the game days for? 3 days feels like a hurry, but I was told any longer and my village may starve in winter.

I've always played at 3 days and it feels right to me. Longer gets boring.
My first game I built my house there, but ever since I've just built it where I want my town to be. If you don't yet know where you want to build your town, then near Gostovia is a good choice.

If I do another run through, that'll be my plan. Build a simple house right next to Gostovia and start building my village in the final spot. You an reassign yourself to a new house anytime.

I did play with 3 days when i first started and felt rushed. I am now playing with 5 days and it seems this works well for me as I always have so much to do (am in year 5). Villagers dn't starve in winter if you have stocked up enough food for them and your hunters are hunting (or you go on a hunt and provide meat). Have not had any problems so far. Have fun!

the length of time for seasons is a personal preference thing play around with a few different season lengths see what feels right personally I never been above 3 yes its rushed at the very begining but before long your sitting around wondering what to do with all the time on your hands.

As for where to build if you head along the road leading out of Gastovia and towards Delcina there is a decent amount of forrest your close to the mountains right on the river and there is a prety large area of flat buildable land just past the forrest. Thats where I set up usually

The lake just north of Delcina is a decent spot to but I prefer using that has a hunting ground since it tends to have everything but bear in that location

In 1.05 I went with 5 days and quick crafting. That first season I accomplished a huge amount and it was amazing. After that, I had less and less to do. By winter, I was bored. I made it to year 3, but it turned into agony. I ended up just wandering around to waste time, and never worked at night. I had to start over, as it just was not fun. Too much stuff is tied up in season change.

I felt like I need to build on the water. I found the Clay pit near Branica and Barnica (honestly, why do they have to have similar names?). What I did was went straight back to the shore. So I would not lose sight of it.

The problem I have is - will there be enough food/farming for this area?

The other problem is most of the quests seem to bring me walking (slowly) back to Gastovia.

It doesn't matter if you leave it at 3 or 30 days. You can change seasons at will by sleeping in your bed. By setting it to 30 you can control the pace. If after 3 days you had enough of the winter then just sleep it away. Those that prefer 3 days usually consider it "cheating" to skip ahead. That's the only reason really to run it lower than 30

Couldn't you just sleep till next season to move along. I had a terrible time in my first Winter and after I got everything done I needed I just slept till Spring to end the season. Note I have my current game set to five day seasons. Upon restart I'll set it to seven just so I have more time for questing. When I get bored I'll just sleep to the next season to move things along.

Its weird that the villagers do not work/starve/need because I slept?

That doesn't sound right at all.

I ended up feeling a little concerned about building a house close to Gostovia for this purpose, and instead became sort of a sleep-free zombie that just constantly runs around at night doing things until morning.

SNIP

I thought it odd that I was the only one willing to drink from the creek that's running right next to the village (I had it there for a reason dang it). But NO, they have to have water in buckets to drink from. Where the heck do they think I got the water from to fill those buckets? :(

3 days is realy good, you could go for 4 day seasons which gives you more time but might create issues with food supply until you know how to handle it.

You can build your house near Gostovia but this will not give you much of an advantage. The house storage is tiny you will not sleep much in the beginning and you will have a kitchen soon enough that you do not need to cook in your own house. You even do not need to start with your house as first building better go for workshop or material storage until you have the stones for stone walls.

I prefer the spot in front of the mine between Branica and Baranica which gives you a lot of stones early, short ways for trading including a cloth trader (Belt+Backpack) to carry more stuff. There are many other good starting locations for a village just stay away from wolfs and bears in the beginning ;)

I keep going back to Branica/Baranica and looking around. Its so spares tree-wise, and while there is flat land, it isn't much, not much water.

It seems like the closest to ideal, although really I like the cross roads west of Gastonia -logically I would pick that if it were real life.

None. Exactly what I did, and I kept it (empty) as somewhere to store stuff or have a sleep if i would otherwise have to travel back and forth otherwise. It also means you can hire a new villager at short notice if you spot a GOOD one and they need not be homeless while you build them a house in the main village.
Ulthar Oct 11, 2021 @ 2:01pm
thats a clever idea. Does the repair people from your village go out to check on it?

I think it's neat that you don't have to do anything other than a camp fire and a rabbit trap 'till you die, just stop near Gostovia, make a camp, pick berries and mushrooms, no quest nothing else. Not very interesting but you can.

I've been going with six days per season. here is why.
-I hate working in the dark, go to bed when it's dark, it comes out the same as a 3 day season if you work day and night. However they did increase night lighting.
-farmers do not have enough time to harvest and replant a 16 x 16 field of vegetables in a 3 day season.
- on the 3rd day you have the option to skip to the next season.
- no reason not to have a six day season.

For village placement, anywhere flat is best, now that is doesn't matter where you put the resource gathering, except for the mine. The quests are going make you walk all over, it really just depends on how important the mines are to you, if they are important, then you'll want to be near one to mine it out (drop a storage near it.) every season.
