My first game I built my house there, but ever since I've just built it where I want my town to be. If you don't yet know where you want to build your town, then near Gostovia is a good choice.
I did play with 3 days when i first started and felt rushed. I am now playing with 5 days and it seems this works well for me as I always have so much to do (am in year 5). Villagers dn't starve in winter if you have stocked up enough food for them and your hunters are hunting (or you go on a hunt and provide meat). Have not had any problems so far. Have fun!
As for where to build if you head along the road leading out of Gastovia and towards Delcina there is a decent amount of forrest your close to the mountains right on the river and there is a prety large area of flat buildable land just past the forrest. Thats where I set up usually
The lake just north of Delcina is a decent spot to but I prefer using that has a hunting ground since it tends to have everything but bear in that location
The problem I have is - will there be enough food/farming for this area?
The other problem is most of the quests seem to bring me walking (slowly) back to Gastovia.
That doesn't sound right at all.
I ended up feeling a little concerned about building a house close to Gostovia for this purpose, and instead became sort of a sleep-free zombie that just constantly runs around at night doing things until morning.
I thought it odd that I was the only one willing to drink from the creek that's running right next to the village (I had it there for a reason dang it). But NO, they have to have water in buckets to drink from. Where the heck do they think I got the water from to fill those buckets? :(
You can build your house near Gostovia but this will not give you much of an advantage. The house storage is tiny you will not sleep much in the beginning and you will have a kitchen soon enough that you do not need to cook in your own house. You even do not need to start with your house as first building better go for workshop or material storage until you have the stones for stone walls.
I prefer the spot in front of the mine between Branica and Baranica which gives you a lot of stones early, short ways for trading including a cloth trader (Belt+Backpack) to carry more stuff. There are many other good starting locations for a village just stay away from wolfs and bears in the beginning ;)
It seems like the closest to ideal, although really I like the cross roads west of Gastonia -logically I would pick that if it were real life.
I've been going with six days per season. here is why.
-I hate working in the dark, go to bed when it's dark, it comes out the same as a 3 day season if you work day and night. However they did increase night lighting.
-farmers do not have enough time to harvest and replant a 16 x 16 field of vegetables in a 3 day season.
- on the 3rd day you have the option to skip to the next season.
- no reason not to have a six day season.
For village placement, anywhere flat is best, now that is doesn't matter where you put the resource gathering, except for the mine. The quests are going make you walk all over, it really just depends on how important the mines are to you, if they are important, then you'll want to be near one to mine it out (drop a storage near it.) every season.
