Minshafts are darker inside at night
When you still have just excavation shed the mine are dark. You would suppose that night and day should not matter for how dark it is or how well the torches light it up., but the torches have far shorter reach inside the shaft at night than during the day. Is this likely to be fixed?

Update - ref use of campfire in the cave
The advise from "Sarke" about campfire is a simple and easy solution, especially for quick and easy navigating in and out of the cave. "Hugging the wall" will wast a lot of time. I tested it and it works very well even with the cheap basic campfire built of 16 sticks each.

Well, during the day there is still a little daylight in the mine. But not at night. why don't you buy the night vision potion? You'll see wonderfully.

Damn, why didn't i think of that? I put a bunch of the standing torches into the mine, but unfortunately the light radius is really small and "a bunch" isn't nearly enough.

I am sorry but that is not a good answer. If you are standing as far inside as possible it should not matter if it is night or day. And it should definitivly not have any influence on how much light you get from the torch.

I'm not a DEV I can't tell you why that is. I only know that the night vision potion is helpful. It must be good for something, since the night has already been made brighter again. Secondly, once you build the mine, it will be all lit up thanks to the mine. The entire mine. Just be patient and use a night vision potion until then. That's the advice I can give at this point, with the current state of the game.

Realistic lighting situation? no. Does it matter? no.
Sadly, the night vision potion has such a short-term effect that it's a silly waste of coins, gather/brew effort to craft, and time to utilize.

Some of the medicinal plant potions/medicines are very useful and have a purpose. Others, like ‘night vision,’ are just Harry Potter silly.

Silly superpowers could have been left out of the game IMO. As the game is at the moment, I ignore them.
Once you have built the Mine entrance - you get sufficient internal lighting for free.

You can build fireplaces inside the mine that you can light during the day. I tried building torches but they only light up during the night.

Do you mean stone campfires? Do they give more light than the torches? They would also have the advantage of not requiring linen thread... Wood is easy to come by and stones are more than abundant in the mine itself.

Yeah, stone fireplaces. I'm not sure they are brighter than than standing torches, but they can be lit around the clock.

I tried them out now, the light radius seems to be the same. But they are much easier to build. There are some spots where you can't place a fire because the floor is too uneven, that's where you can put down the standing torches, even if they are only lit at night.

I haven't yet to use a night vision potion so I don't really know how well it works. However, if you are concerned about the "magic" aspect of it being silly, then think of it this way. The herbalist has concocted a combination of herbs that force your iris to open and allow in more light.
I just finished doing some mining. In addition to the mine shafts lamps, I found out I could swing the pickaxe in the right hand and hold the lit hand torch in the left hand. It was almost like daylight down there, even deep into the vein to extract iron ore.

Thank you to all contributors. As mentioned in the edit the simplest/cheapest campfire works well inside the cave. Mostly as an effective guide that help with mining of Copper, Tin and Salt prior to Mine building being available. The fact that it is darker inside the cave at night is not a problem, but it is probably not intended.
