Great Spot
North side of the river to Gastovia close to the last bridge on the West. Easy access and safe from animals to three towns. Rabbits are local. Also just over bridge to Rolnica. Not as flat and wide open as across the river but plenty of herbs, stones, wood. Beware of wolves north of the B' towns. Bison roam the deep woods so keep hunting closer to trails.

You are not wrong!
I've just restarted a game at that location, with a house, Barn I, and Kiln I. Plenty of south-facing slopes for fields. Hunting Lodge can go in woods to the East, Fishing in between the two bridges west of Gastovia, and I hear there's a mine not too far away....
The bison....yeah, they are hard work!

Bison/Wisent is not a big deal with a recurve bow! :steammocking:

Meeting of four trails in one place. Which ever area nearby you choose is bound to be good. I like my choice because I only need to walk to pick berries, occasionally hunt, and trade. Otherwise all you need is on the doorstep. Gostovia is a trek to pay tax. Not a problem. But again, stick to the trails. On the north side I have seen boar too.

Hehe that\s exactly where I settled on my first playthrough! Now 36 hours into the game and passed year 5. Just finished Unighost's damn Quest which I was unable to finish in Spring, but just a few steps before I could reach him in the night of the last Spring Day, I was teleported back to my house and had to run back to him to finish it up.

But so far I like this spot, even though while running from village to village, I found a nice spot with a flowing little river and some tree that looks really beautiful. I would never cut this one down! But I have too much stuff already built and would not want to start over again LOL. Maybe someday I will restart the game there.

Yes, I agree, it is a good spot :D I have about 100 hrs in this village , only in year 7 but am running a 5-day season. I could restart a bit west of here, more flat land, but going through all those quests and "Tech-climbing" , I don't think I want to go through it all again.. I do remember that Unigost quest! :D I'll stay here and make the best of it

At first, with the default settings, while discovering the game's world, you are hard pressed to settle quickly. So, probably the first house will be somewhere close to Gostovia. Even after playing for some time it is still one of the best options. But you'll soon find out that the game's world is beautiful no matter where you choose to build your village and, depending on the path you choose, every single spot can be great from a certain survival point of view. Things may change in future versions, survival may become harsher, but I don't think there will be radical shifts. So, the question "what are the best spots" becomes "where would you like to live in this beautiful valley"?

This time I had a 'normal' start, somewhere between Gostovia and Danica

Now I'm moving in a more challenging spot (I have XXL crop fields), where I exchanged some harsh words with my neighbours too

... But can't beat the view in the southern side of the map, in the mountains

Lovely sites! :D
Yes, I do agree with you.. You can find lovely spots almost anywhere.. It is almost like I want to restart my IRL life too now! *lol*, building that log cabin I almost did in 2015..:D
But as you know, it is hard to start from scratch again when you have put in 160 hrs already.. We do make quick decisions in the beginning as you say and we have to do the best of it now. It is a long way back if you restart..
I am happy now though.. not perfect settlement but it will have to do.

I politely disagree. The necessity of #1 water proximity and #2 reasonable flat land nearby to expand must exclude 80% of the map. Considering maybe 10 or 15% of the map is mountains or waterways, maybe 10% of the map is viable for settling. This makes the spot selection a decision of great importance. But, if your ambition is to be a loner, then pick any spot.

I thought so too, at first. I'd actually love this kind of challenge, if it really existed. But give it a bit of time. After familiarising yourself with the game's geography and mechanics, you'll see how, on the contrary, maybe 10% of the map is kind of bad for founding a settlement. Perhaps a bit more with the default settings for seasons length, where wasting a day on a map tour may be important.

This is where I move now, N-E of Hornica, purely for the vistas

See the size of the town? And the mines N of Baranica and E of Hornica? And the crop fields and storage I still have N-W of Gostovia (to be moved next season)? As long as you can place almost anything anywhere, basically without any bad consequence, you'll see there is virtually no single spot on the map you cannot call home. Sadly, because (again) I'd love this to be one of the greatest challenges in game. Instead, you can make it work almost anywhere. Except for one or two spots. there will always be a creek, a pond, a swamp within reach. Place your tavern and your house there and you're good to go. No room for expansion? Remove a tree, or place that building a few metres farther, done. Your town can be as long and wide as the entire map.

Of course everything is in reach. But since you need two drinks a day it is a time waster to trek far for it. Same for fields to harvest, etc. It is just a question of minimising effort, esp in early game. Later when you have a horse, the world is your oyster.
