What we can learn from this is:
Try to avoid wolves when you're out with your horse, or at least make sure you don't slow down or even stop, and don't try to attack the wolves while your horse is around.

Seriously, your horse is much faster than wolves could ever be and it can maintain full speed for quite a long time. Just flee immediately until you are on safe ground.

Avoiding wolves is important, yes. It's also a good trick to have an enclosure for your horses, so when a wolf should follow you home despite everything, you can just jump the fence and he can't follow you.

That said, losing a horse is sad. Take this invisible internet hug. At least you got those wolves for it.

That's a great Idea! I didn't think of that, yet...

I live near Hornica. It was necessary. xD

I'll do something similar to that once I got my own horse in my new game. I started over again when version 0.4.x was published and things take some time to develop now, which I like a lot, honestly. However, it might take another few years for me to unlock stables for horses, so... Anyway, I'll copy this great idea of your's. :D

Another tipp for the OP which might be helpful:
make it a habit to perform a quicksave in the game every once in a while (F5 by default setting) so you can go back to an earlier time in the game when your horse was still alive.
I usually do this at least every time when I go for a journey so if something unexpected happens I always can start over from a point when I was still alive and with all arms and legs attached to my body precisely at the spots where these usually are expected to be. ;)

My game was so nice to crash after I lost my horse to wolves so I got my horse back reloading the old save (it wouldn't have occured to me that I could just load an older save, guess it's not the way I usually play. What happens, happens.) Anyway I had the horse and wolves situation again as I have no orientation and took the wrong path. I jumped and bounced around in the mountains on my horse like a headless chicken and after a while when my horse was completely out of stamina, the wolf was gone. Sigh.
Tips when riding a horse if being followed by a pack of a wolf

- Try to jump a fence (any fence), there is some fence in the road near Hornica from Gostovia, more like near Hornica forest.
- Cross a body of water (a lake 100% chance) or water stream/river (50% chance), dangerous wild animal should stop following.
- This one is a bit risky, only attempt it if you had more practice:
Go to a rocky terrain shaping like a mountain, then fall down from a certain height, the horse will take some damage but will heal over time, while the wolf will fall down as well, and might get startled, fingers cross it will stop following you, and don't stop or look back.
- Horse can only dismount from the right or left side if not blocked by something (can be an NPC, an animal, a wall, a tree, etc..).

Well done. :)
They got what they asked for...^^
I don't even use my horse any more when I have to go to Hornica, got killed too often. My horse does not seem to be able to outrun wolves even at the gallop. It's a shame because that's my longest journey.

There is one trick that you can try that has worked for me in the past when on foot and beset by a pack of wolves (one I can handle). Before you actually die do an F5 quicksave and reload - often as not the wolves will be reset somewhere else, usually close by, but it does buy you time. Then get up the nearest rocky outcrop and shoot them as they come up (they seem to have trouble getting up steep rocks).

We really need to be able to use weapons from horseback. As it stands you cannot even take a drink from your water bottle without first dismounting!

I too leave my horse at home when going to Hornica as have been attacked several times. As soon as I have finished at Hornica I run to a safer area and whistle for Horsey ( daft name, I know) and ride home on a safer route (wolf free).

Actually, it may exist a "wolf free" path from Gostovia to Hornica. For now (0.4.0.2). At least, I took it about 20 times round-trip, never saw nor heard a wolf:

- from Gostovia, go west following the road by the river/lake until the bridge to Rolnica. (do not go to Denica)
- head south following the road by the river/lake until the first bridge to Lesnica. (again, do not go to Denica)
- south again, leave the road and follow the river until you see a meadow on your left after the second bridge. Then you can catch the road again (there is a wolf spawn near the roads junction in the woods on your left, that's why you must take the river)
- once at Jezerica, go east through the mountains (the road starts at the right of the food storage). Each time you see a roads junction, turn right.
- welcome at Hornica!

You will see deers, foxes, one or two buffaloes and that's it. BUT this is a little (who am I kidding...) way longer than the direct road heading south from Gostovia

that's the road I have been taken to Hornica from my village, it's the tourist road. Don't forget to check the waterfall at the lake :p

Here's how I go to Hornica. First I go to the unblock place, then to the east down the mountain, crossing the little brook and also the path until I come to an elevated even ground with a hill behind, where one to three boars spawn. From there I mark Hornica and walk a straight line all across hills and mountains, away from any path. So you go south without touching the wolf area which is a bit northwest of Hornica, as you come from northeast. However this would not be a convenient path for a horse.

My trouble free travel to Hornica involves going cross-country keeping to the west of the mountains and approaching via the little lake and then the path leading south from the spring pool where the Wisent usually are and arriving in Hornica through the entrance by the forge. I've managed to avoid triggering wolf attacks in all my travel by horse for many in-game years. I also have two foals, one of which is adult now so I can actually afford to lose one ultimately, if I get really unlucky.
