Animal feed/fences
I'm aware that in previous updates there was no need for animal feed, and you could fence in animals entirely. Is this still the case? or do i now need to allow access into enclosures for NPCs to feed animals etc? cheers all

NPCs still don't actually need to be at their workplace, with the exception of cropworkers on the fields. Animals need to be fed if you want milk, wool, etc. from them, but they cannot starve if you don't feed them.

You can fence them AND make a worker feed them. That's want I did with all of them and its working. I also let a small space so I can walk in, but it's pretty hard to build... If the space is too small you can't go through, if it's too large the animals can (and will) go out.

I left a little gap on the front part of the fence next to the side and animals don't go through it even though they could fit through. It's only horses that seem to be able to figure the gap out lol. The chickens and geese could absolutely fit through the gaps I made. Not sure if it's because i made the gap towards the side as apose to the centre

I'm pretty sure it's because of the animals "hitbox". Even the chicks can't go through the gap I made and I can use it. About the horse, there is something funny: the worker and the horses can't go through the gap I made, but I can walk and ride through it!

This sounds interesting. Can you please take a screenshot so I understand how you made it.

I'll make them and post them asap.

@staargh. Aha, that's how you built it. I will try that. Thank you very much for taking the pics :)

np, you're welcome. I must admit, for the geese it was pure luck... and it's how I found the trick. But I worked my ass for the horses...

I'm not sure it it is hit boxes or pathing for the AI that gets confused by such an opening. I have seen this same sort of fence/opening in other games where you can't build a gate.

Something like this might also work

__--__

I only have pigs in my current game and my pig pen is away from houses but close to the fields. All I did was leave a gap in the fence. So far I'm happy with them wandering around in the woods and fields but after reading this thread I just might try this type of opening in the fence.

@werric: you must be right, it should be the pathing otherwise I wouldn't be able to ride through the gap.

do you need a fence, or can you just leave it be?

You don't need a fence, your livestock can just wander around and they'll be fine. Nothing will attack animals.
