Ok whats up with the camp fires not giving option to cook meat? All guides tell you that you can. I see no option for it.

If you mean the ones in the NPC villages then it's normal, you can no longer interract with most things in them.

You need to make your own camp fires (the cheapest is 16 sticks) and light it (you need a torch equipped) and interract with it.
You can also use the fire in your house, just point the mouse cursor at the fire under the pot instead of the pot itself.

The majority of guides out there are from around the initial launch in early access back in september and october, they were not updated as the game received several major updates as months went by.

I have built the small camp fire lit it with torch but only option is sleep.

Are you using the default version of the opt-in one?
Werric Jun 18, 2021 @ 8:34pm
Once you've lit the camp fire while looking at it just tap "E". Don't hold it down as that will take you to the sleep option. Once you tap it the cooking option should come up.

default version, I had to double tap "E". Thanks

Tbh, we should be able to cook at every burning fire we come across. No matter where it is. Because it´s burning. It´s hot and if you put food in there, it will be cooked. I bet if my neighbor on his property starts a fire and i try to cook with it, it will work. Because it´s a burning fire.

It´s kind of weird to leave a town with a camp fire at night just to run around with your own to be crafted camp fire till you are far enough away from said town to build it. Just to cook or sleep then. While you came across a nice burning camp fire minutes before. Unnecessarily unrealistic, imho.

Press E once, while mouse Over on fire, and you should see the Cooking Option. Pres and Holding puts you to sleep.

I found that difference very hard to discover my very first time. A short tap is the key.

Ahhh but you did learn, and that is a good thing. :steamhappy:

but the number of videos I watched and help files I searched before I succeeded myself was indicative that it was not intuitive. i knew it should be there so pressed more purposefully to try and get it, not less. Once cracked, never a problem again. I sympathise with others not stumbling on it or getting it right at first.

I guess it depends what games you played before as well, for me the difference between the hit and hold prompts were very clear but I do play a whole lot of different games so I got used to this difference but if you never encountered games that had both for different actions it could definitely throw you off.

I think describes me. Mostly Skyrim and a bit of Fallout 4 and the Witcher 3 previously for me.

I could see it the other way. Look at it from their perspective. The Village Campfire is a central meeting place for all. No one gets to monopolize it and make 1/2 dozen people smell/see your food when they just want to relax and chat. When I cook meet from a hunt - it can take hours and hours in game.

Same goes for having transients crash around your Village Campfire over night. Who wants that? I could see the Lore behind not having to add this special code and just have players walk 20 seconds to make their own fire.

I'm more shocked that there is no Village Well.

If you look at the interface for anything, "press E quickly" is represented by the letter E, while "hold down E" is represented by the letter E with a slight white curve along the right side. So the game is trying to prompt you about what to do, it's just very, very subtle... it is one of the things that should probably be pointed out in the tutorial.

It would be nice if the behavior was consistent, either tap E or hold E. This doing both is annoying. Personally I'd prefer it all be tap. I'm old and it's bad enough I'm always holding down the W key as it is.
