And that the season fly by is exactly what you want. No need to rush at all in this game. Absolutly no benefit from it. You have so many 100 years to go..
Also: dont recruit to much. Allways better for all players to take it slow and follow the chapter quests.
The game itself is balanced around the idea of taking your time to do things, 3 days per season and sleeping at night.
A lot of systems in the game are based on season changes and years passing by.
Crops only care about seasons, a lot of resources regenerate on season change, random quests only refresh at that time as well, trees regrow in 2 years if you left the stumps alone, women that gave birth won't work for 2 whole years (which impacts you a bit on 3 days per season but can be really handicaping at 10 days per season, it gets worse if you have many giving birth around the same time no matter the season length of course).
If you are fine with not necessarily having your own home finished before the end of spring and at most having a couple houses by the end of the first year, slowly growing your village and doing other things without rushing anything then 3 days per season (and even sleeping at night) is fine.
You start at 18 years old and your character can only die of old age starting at 60, you need to have an heir of at least 18 at that point to continue (if you even play that long).
You also don't have competitors or anything like that and your yearly taxes are based on your buildings so wasting a year or two at the begining is really not an issue at all (unless it's an issue for you personally of course).
If you want to be satisfied with how much you progressed in each day, season and year then not sleeping and a few more days can be a good pick as well.
I personally prefer 3 days because as you progress, season changes and years going by tend to be more and more important compared to what you do in those seasons (since most of the work is done by your villagers by that point).
If you want to only do one playthrough, maybe pick 4 or 5 days as a compromise.
If you don't mind restarting after a while if you feel that the season length is just not right (or edit your save), you can always start with a longer season and see for yourself.
I started with 15, it was way too long for my tastes so I changed it to 5, it ended up dragging on after setting up a basic village so I went for 3 days and it finally felt right.
Restarting can also help you figure out where you really want to settle since you usually don't have much of an idea of how everything works at first.
I think I'll set it at 4 days and start a "lookaround" playthrough whilst I get the hang of the mechanics ... and then restart for my main game at 3 day season.
I'm sure the devs knew what they were doing when they set the defaults.
If I may say ... I've only asked a couple of questions on the forum so far and I'm very impressed by the standards of this community. Very helpful replies (especially from Fel)
Hopefully I'll be able to help other newcomers in the coming months as my knowledge increases.
