How do I get flax?

I can't find the seeds anywhere or the stalks. I just want it to make string, so if you can tell me where to buy or get string that works too.

Just get a worker to plant it, and from that you will get seeds.
I was also looking for it from vendors but also never found it.

When your villager has planted it and it is ready to pick, you can use the flax inside the barn and get the stalks that way, or have your villager do it for you.

Is there a way to obtain flax before workers?

I think there is someone selling Flax Stalks, it might be in Gostovia or it might be in hm the village I keep forgetting its name, on same side of the lake but following the river.
I do know you can buy the stalks, but haven't found the seeds for it.

Honestly though, if you have a worker do it, you get it for free right now.
So might be worth investing an extra house for rectuiting one npc.

Can buy the seeds... i think it was in the northwest somewhere, but there were 2 vendors selling them i dont remember the second one.

Yes, unigost sells flaxstrings, flax, flaxstalks. Just no seeds.

Not sure if this is what people are asking or not, but flax seeds might not be sold (don't remember since it's been a while since I bought anything from vendors instead of just mindlessly selling what I have in my inventory). The guy you pay taxes to sells flax things, if I remember rightly, and if you have a barn, you can take flax and thresh it to get both flax stalks and flax seeds. It's the flax stalks that you use to make linen.
