I walled in my chickens - other than that I see absolutely no reason for any fence in this game

Am I missing something? Pigpen, Cows, Goose, Sheep all seem to have no good purpose from what I have seen (to be clear I can just go buy wool thread at vendors in towns of Branica, Denica, and Hornica and upgrade myself if need be to wool fabric), plus, the only good reason for wool seems to be lantern which is only useful for aesthetics, and therefore, low priority in careful progression of a "dynasty").

Anyways, "fence" purpose?

Decoration, mainly.

like you the only animals i have are sheep for the wool (for street lights) and let them roam free and as you say until the devs fix the reason for those other animals there is no reason for fences

I use fences for aesthetics. All my gardens have fences, they look uniform and pretty.

Changed my mind on "Fold" - got one, and I will just save wool forever - maybe I will decide to light everything like so many have done on youtube videos but for now I worry I might need lots of coin in the future for "Story" progression and wasting that coin today on lights might be a big mistake

Pigs produce manure for your fields, goats and cows produce milk and free buckets. Milk is the best food+drink in this game so far. You carry one bucket of milk in your inventory and it provides 10 food and 10 drinks. And after that you get a bucket. Chicken and geese produce eggs and feathers. I would not say animals have no good purpose.
Farming is profitable and animal breeders contribute to your technology.

Wool is needed for warm clothes, not just for decoration. We are given some by Uniegost but crafting a good warm tunic and a better hood might be a good idea. Takes a lot of wool, too.
We should stock up on wool (and linen) fabric because one day we will need to provide clothing to our villagers.

Don’t, (or won’t), fences be used to keep the bad things out at nighttime? That’s eventually coming down the pipe I’m sure. Our towns will need those strong walls to keep out the savage hordes attempting to rape & pillage our townsfolk!

I let my sheep and chickens run around freely. I do have fences, but just to make the village look nicer. Since there are no gates, there's little point in trying to fence animals in. How will the workers get to them then? Animals don't get into any trouble roaming around the village, and they don't eat the crops.

I do hope they implement raiders or at least wolves attacking the village, at some point. But I really hope they give us gates, before then. I have a pallisade around the entire village, but obviously I have to leave openings to get in and out.

First of all fences can be used to keep animals in a specific area, though, it is a bit tricky to do this effectively, but works well once you figure out how. But more than that they make things look nice. And as was stated in previous response, animals are useful for producing things that are either useful now or will be later in game development. Sure the clothing stuff is pretty useless at the moment, but maybe the game will become more balanced at a later date, or you could simply specialize in whatever you want to do from a role playing perspective.

Maybe foxes attacking chickens/geese.

Fences will also be better when/if we get gates, but as nothing is attacking at the moment that would also just be a cosmetic thing, but could be handy to stop the animals roaming far and wide.

But, also remember it's early access alpha, and there's still a lot to do/add. I think they're doing a good job with the pace of updates and additions.

Workers don't(at present) need access to animals. May change in the future, though.

And people. Including babies in the arms of their mothers and wandering toddlers. If there a large body of water between where you hire someone and your town, they will walk under water instead of around the deeper water.

I haven't yet found any body of water I couldn't cross with my head and shoulders still above the waterline.
