FYI, you only fail quests when the season changes.
At the moment there is no way to recover in-game from this, other than completing quests etc. Outside of it you could use a save editor to give yourself the points.
A way to recover from this in-game somehow would be interesting, though.
Use "Ctrl+F" for easier navigation.
Scroll to the bottom, if you have not seen it all.

Whenever you do not pay your taxes on time, your dynasty rep will be penalised every season until it is paid in full, including the interest you will have incurred.
That is most likely to have happened in your case, since the penalties for a failed quest or seen to have stolen something are not as severe.
When your dynasty rep falls to -10,000 you will be exiled and it's game over.
You can recover your deficit by accepting and successfully completing many quests. It will take many years.
You have 3 options:
1. Play a very long game to recover what you lost.
2. Roll back to a previous save before you failed to pay your taxes.
3. Start a new game.
Make sure every Spring you're paying taxes.
Well, I'd suggest you to learn as much as possible from your "rocky start" then and start with a new game.
If you do so, try to be a little more attentive, though. There must have been quite a lot going wrong on your side to get that much negative reputation.
I don't agree with other players that there is always only a -1 rep "reward" if you fail a quest. This only counts for the side quests. Within the story quests you really can screw up pretty bad and loose quite a lot reputation if you fail. ;)
Honestly, I see no chance to recover from your bad reputation, unless you continue with the hard way and work your way up, doing nothing more than side quests and prepare to do this for more than 2 generations before you can expect to be on the good side again.
So, once again, starting a new game would be the best idea in my opinion.
Make the best of it and try to do better than before.
And dont forget to do a quicksave (F5) always before you accept any quest. :)
As for the Uniegost questline, my husband messed up with Uniegost III and IV. He failed no. 3 and never got no. 4. He didn't lose any reputation, he is in year fortysomething and his Uniegost is 100 years old now.
As for the chapters, it was my impression that they give you as much time as you need to advance, or can they fail if you don't accomplish them within a certain number of years?
No, I don't think you can fail with the chapters since there is no time limit, as you said.
But with the Uniegost quests, if you fail at Uniegost 2 (where you need to travel all around the map and collect taxes for him) you can get quite a huge impact on your reputation. I failed that quest once and lost 250 reputation.
Well, I still have no idea how you can "earn" such a lot of negative reputation as the OP did.
