Bow for hunting
I always use spears for hunting, but I want to try a bow. There are three bows in the game and I wonder, which is the best for hunting?

Depends on what you're hunting. Remember every shot reduces the durability of the bow, so using the most powerful bow and arrows to hunt rabbits is not a very good idea, as you're reducing the weapons durability for little gain. In fact using anything but a spear again rabbits doesn't make a lot of sense. Same with foxes and other small game. If you want to bring down deer the cheap bow and stone arrows will work. If you're looking to bring down a bear ... well the most powerful bow and arrows is recommended. If you're not sure what your hunting just bring a spear and a couple bows.

actually its not easy to answer,

there is 3 bows with different damages + 5 types of arrows with different damages... but its not clear how to count total damages, anybudy can explain how it is ?
It largely depends on what you can afford (or craft). LeBurns has a point about rabbits but then if you have a bow why bother with rabbits anyway. The basic simple bow can be found sometimes at wrecked carts and abandoned camps. The long bow will kill anything as will the recurve bow, recurve is somewhat faster to reload. Just as important are the arrows you use in order of power - wood, stone, copper, bronze, iron. For things like a bear or a wisent even iron arrows don't kill easily. For deer, wolves and boar better arrows will kill in one head shot.

Just skip the crossbow, it takes hours to reload,

Some sources say that recurve bow does 55 damage insted of 45 as writen in the above guide.

mayby also "sources" can explain if I use longbow with stone arrow - it give 25 damage (arrow power only) or 25 + 55 = 80 damage (plus bow power) ?

Probably is the summation, but in the end it's intuitive. Obviously iron wepons are top tier and better. The difference is speed, long bows a little slower than recurve, etc... I'm playing a long time now using recurve bow + iron bolts and it's fine. Here an interesting weapon damage test.

add the damage amounts stated in the item descriptions together, for total damage amount

"Probably is the summation" i thought same at start but mayby bow damage is max you can get but depends from arrow power only, so no matter which bow you use for stone arrows - gives same effect

This doesn't seem accurate at all for version 1.0+

You're right, there's an update of damage in the comments (I believe since that update, damage values haven't changed, not sure).

The safe way is to use iron arrows, since you already using a good bow. This arrows are not too expensive and much more efficient than stone ones, this I'm sure.
long bow melts and gets even better as you level hunting and get perks that help with accuracy and draw time

depends what you like for me i like the recurve cause it was a little faster sometimes you need the little extra speed and metal arrows for bleedout

Thanks for thinking along. I've practiced with four bows now and I liked the Recurve bow the most. For the bandits I prefer the stone arrows I have more experience with that at the moment.

I only been using an iron crossbow, i scored it early on. I forget where, random loot.
It's nice and all, but the reload is soooo slow.
Honestly havnt gone out hunting, outside of quest related hunts. Been busy with my city. But will try the other bows soon, with the above comments. I might like the bow over the crossbow, mostly cause its reload speed :)
