If for some reason it happens again I'll try that, but we really shouldn't have to do that.
Did you perhaps disable the water usage on the consumption tab?
Villagers will not fill buckets/skins from rivers/lakes, so if you don't have the well you will have to do it yourself.
In EA there was no mechanism to get water for cooking or (player) drinking other than by going to a river/lake, so building far from water was even worse.
Just seems like an oversight, basic necessities (food/water) should come after your first house.
but the well is extremely easy to unlock in just a few minutes of time. just create a large field, use a hoe on it. delete the field if need be and repeat the process. i advise do this until you unlock pigsty.
i personally focus on tech before recruiting anyone or trying romance. i unlock simple house and build a bunch of them out of stone. that way i can later go on a recruiting spree when i feel i am ready to set up that automation.
i built most of this village before hiring anyone or getting married.
was about 40 in-game days worth of work.
i had over 20 stone simple houses set up before i went on a recruiting spree.
i probably hired 40 people in like 6 days.
taxes on unfinished houses was the same as finished houses.
i do know how to make coin so i was fine paying taxes for owning a ghost town for years with no inhabitants, lol...
Then something was glitched. I had no trouble dropping buckets of water in food storage.
