Honestly for the weight and expense of the crossbow, and the time to reload, it's easier just to use wooden spears to hunt. It takes like 5-6 bolts to kill a deer and you can do that with 1-3 spears, which are easily crafted anywhere there are trees.

I know this thread is old, but I wouldn't want a bear or boar charging me, if I had a crossbow. It takes too long to reload. A recurve bow with iron arrows is far faster and more effective.

the trick is walking around the map with a loaded crossbow. you just have to hit and at least one animal wont keep up to you / dies

Jan in Hornica sells crossbows.; otherwise, you can craft one yourself, but you need to build a smithy first. However, as another poster noted, the recurve bow is faster and more efficient. I one-shot wolves and everything else with mine...except bison; it takes three to bring those down.

Crossbow is slow (reload) but you need only one bolt in the head to kill animals... except bizon (you need two) and bear (three). Whenever you get headshot, animal will move slowly and you have time to reload unless.... stress will eat you ;-)

The crossbow should load as quickly as a handgun, far too slow
