Raw edibles collected by villagers also go into this storage.
Maybe they eat the raw food if there's none cooked in there? I haven't tested that theory
[EDIT.. I read elsewhere they just eat top to bottom.. that's unfortunate if correct :( especially since spoiled food is a thing now]
which is why i thought they took the food from the food store and cooked at home for the whole household to feed on
maybe later in the development of the game they would buy made meals from the tavern (along with ale) and the cash comes to you ...who knows lol
They do really need to let us select what they eat. There is a couple of problems with only putting your finished food in the chest. One is that it is the slowest container to rot so putting your food into other chest will cause it to rot faster. Also if you have a tavern worker they need the raw materials stored in the food storage to be able to work. Don't forget your farm workers also put all that they gather in there as well.
They dont eat poisonous food, so raw meat is not eaten, only if roasted or cooked.
Everything else they eat, top down in inventory.
Berry first, then eggs and whatever is next in the list.
Eggs and roasted meat is the most eaten food in my village, I have 2 cooks who make enough of it.
The pottage and soups (also made by cooks) can be sold, as my settlers don´t eat enough of the other things to get even close to pottage or soup :)
I have made some breads and other baking products for testing, some of it ranges fairly high in the list and will be consumed (flatbread), others way down in the list never will be eaten.
There is only 1 mushroom that is in the top10 of food storage list, which will be consumed all others way down in the list, will rot if you don´t take it out for sale.
Food consumption needs more randomness, or some other mechanic behind, that settlers eat different food, instead always the one on top in storage list.
As it is now, it is really bad.
That actually is a pretty good idea. That way you can keep your raw materials in the food storage building without your villagers eating through them. The inn keeper can then put the finished goods into the tavern chest and the villagers pull from that.
Still may need some weighting system for eating the oldest foods first or something. Other wise still may end up with allot of spoiled food as they keep eating stuff just put in.
Until you get a tavern increased spoilage or losing your crops would be an incentive to build a tavern.
I see no reason to even build one as yet, everyone can live on potage or roasted meat to the end of time.
Well, if that were the case, it would be helpful to have a compost pile so your plebs aren't eating rancid meat that would otherwise be converted into fertilizer.
