Yosuke/Naoto are red mages.
Chie/Kanji are monks
Yukiko/Teddie are white mages (also with a huge damage spell)
Obligatory "you can choose whatever and it'll work" goes here, but I always tend to stick to one of each for a "balanced" party.
That's probably the best all around party in the game.
Naoto/Kanji/Yukiko.
Naoto was buffed heavily in Golden. She is rock solid.
MC is by far the strongest fighter and as such, you should pick companions who allow him to focus on killing enemies. That means you want them to: 1) heal. So Yukiko or Teddie; 2) buff and debuff. In mid game guys get variety of such skills so your optimal party is Yosuke/Kanji/Teddie. However, once we hit December, you should be able to fuse persona with debilitate skill which applies all debuffs on one target. With that you can swap Kanji or Teddie out if you want so. The main change comes with third evolutions however. With them girls gain some seriously cool moves, while guys get junk. Chie's third evolution is particularly important as her ultimate skill allows her to perform buffing duty singlehandedly. So for the final part of the game the best party is Chie/Yukiko/Naoto. For further effect, take them to hot springs: Chie and Yukiko 5 times (learn bufudyne and mind charge respectively), Naoto twice (replace agidyne with ziodyne)
Punchline: you don't need to follow any of these advices to best the game on any difficulty
With the above in mind, you can try your hand at fusing something like a Auto-Maruku/Masuku/Mataru persona (I chose Trumpeter since you need him for Margaret anyway and he has good native resistances plus you can easily give him mind charge with megidolaon), equip it and let the team handle most fights since they cover all the bases already.
But who really needs friends in battle when you can be like Demifiend
