I hate you. I hate your life and your eyes and your stomach.
The story is different, so is the premise, but mechanically a lot of the things are the same regarding actual dungeon exploration and combat. The dungeons all have their own gimmicks to match with the thief setting, and you get better results with stealth, along with them having more of a puzzle focus than P4 does in my opinion.
I'd say if you felt this was dated and repetitive though, P5 is going to have the same problem, both games are very grindy and also have school or slice of life themes.
I know you hate his eyes but what about his face?
That goes both ways. Playing a game after you've played games that went through years of game development since the release of this game, gives an equally skewed perspective as nostalgia can give.
That said. Persona 5 is a lot more modern game in terms of graphics or design.
You will have to be specific about this, as this game isnt particularly low on QoL features. (its not THAT old) Which is in part because its already a remaster of the original game.
For example difficulty couldnt be changed mid game in the original game. Nor could you customize it.
What QoL features do you feel are missing from this game?
Its hard to answer if Persona 5 has those, if you dont mention what they are.
Again, if you want a good answer you will have to be more specific. The dungeons are considered quite bad in this game, and by accounts Persona 5 does have better dungeons.
As for the story, if you dont mention how far into the story you are, and what you consider bad about it...its hard to give an answer.
Your post says a lot, but it doesnt tell much. What did you enjoy about P4G so far? What feels dated to you? What feels repetitive to you?
Answer that, and we can perhaps give you a better idea if Persona 5 Royal is ''better'' for you.
Thanks for the thoughtful response. Yes, I agree, I was unintentionally kind of light on details in my original post. In fact, yes, I kind of agree that the general UI in P4G is not so bad, and the story elements are mostly decent, but the dungeons and combat are pretty uninteresting and repetitive, both from a game play and graphics perspective. I never played any of the original games, so have no particular nostalgic feelings about what it might have been like to play this game years ago on PS2 or Vita. Not trying to be provocative at all, just truly curious about the Persona series and what makes it tick!
P5 - better gameplay and social links
Thanks for reply and details! Glad to hear that, I'm really curious now to try P5R. I think a lot of what's putting me off about P4G are the PS2-era limitations.
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I was also wondering if P5 might have some of the same mechanical problems. Although from what you say, the "puzzle" aspects sound more interesting. I don't necessarily have a huge problem with the grind factor, but P4G dungeons have just felt somewhat uninteresting and repetitive so far.
Its a mistake I often make myself these days, so it was easy to spot because of that. More details is always good to have.
The dungeons are very much considered P4G's low point. The Golden version didnt improve them any either. (shuffle time was reworked to be less RNG tho)
For the combat, well. It doesnt change throughout the game, tho we do get access to more abilities. I can see why you'd feel its repetitive. After a while doing dungeons feels that way to me also.
I cant comment on the combat of P5 but by all accounts the gameplay loop is much improved. I would advise looking for a video on its first few fights to get an idea if its more akin to what your looking for.
When people are excited about P4 over P5, it will be mainly for the characters and its plot. This also includes the S-links, which at higher ranks provide interesting substories for characters.
Social Links tend to start off with a person that the MC is a stranger to, and you get to know their background and become close to them. Some of them are very touching in this game.
I dont know how far you are into this game, but I would say try to max a couple and see if you are interested in that part of the game since it offers more then the combat.
Short but sweet reply, but also informative, thanks!
Ok, interesting, maybe I should try to increase my S-links further and see what happens. So far I have only made it through the Kanji boss, so maybe it is not far enough.
