Is it Possible to Beat Contrarian King on Hard?
I'm at Yukiko's Castle for the third time (twice to rescue Yuki and now back to train her) and I just got to the optional boss Contrarian King.

Well, he's killing anyone and everyone in one hit. I'm using lvl 17 Jack Frost with 13 End. King likes to BS by using Red Wall but he absorbs Fire so it's a bluff (found that out instantly first fight).

Hysterical Slap kills anyone except me cuz Jack's too tough, but it leaves me with like 20 HP. If he uses Rampage, and he will, he drastically overkills everyone, doing like 700 damage to people with a Diamond Shield in use (Defense up). That really seems like some End-Game damage right there... I mean I don't think even the Reaper has ever hit me for that in P3P or P4.

Is there some specific trick? Like a specific sequence in which I need to do certain things? Or is it just a troll from Atlus and they are just forcing people to put it on Normal or Easy to get past him? I'm attempting a full play on Hard, but with damage that unimaginable, I don't see that happening at all. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see him bust out Megidolaon on me.

In Golden its not quite as good as the Phys Evade weapon you get by trading at the Pub.
That "shop" has some very OP weapons, and even stuff from P3. Naturally I have Chie using In-line Skates right now, a classic low-mid tier accessory for Yukari.

Contrarian King's Rampage is tuned up to hit for I think Heavy damage instead of Light. The easiest, braindead way to do it is to wait until you can fuse something that Nulls Physical, at which point the protagonist can't die.

I personally did it on 6/25 towards the end of the Striptease dungeon with Ose. I can't really pinpoint what I did, I just kept hitting him hard. Kanji got a few lucky criticals which helped.

Are the inline skates really that good? What's that good about them? The spike bat I know is great because of the crit rate up, but I didn't think the skates had anything good about them.

Im just glad the game lets you retry the floor instead of boot you back to the menu.
I would have been salty as ♥♥♥♥ if the game made you reload.

Game certainly expects you to know what the boss is capable of prior to fighting it.
barely any chance of beating the boss blind on your first encounter unless you somehow just get so lucky he doesn't rampage.
The only way he will maybe not use Rampage is if you don't knock him down at all. If you do, it's guaranteed to happen. When you manage to knock him down, you got 2 options:

  1. Forgo the use of AoA and just hit him in the hopes it makes him Dizzy (if not it's GG)
  2. Forgo the use of AoA and just Guard with everyone, knowing he'll us Rampage

Either way, All-out Attack is out. It just doesn't do the damage you require and leaves you all open for certain death from Rampage.

In fact, AoA seems to be almost useless in general except against softies like birds etc.. It really would be a waste if not for Twin Dragons from Chie/Yukiko. AoA seems to do less damage in P4G than it did in P4. It's a better idea to go for the Dizzy while they're down.

i had him rampage multiple times even w/o doing AoA or even knockdowns.

On the usefulness of AoA's in general, its best use is for ensuring shuffletime, or against certain mobs that it saves using SP to finish.

I said he will "maybe" not Rampage. It's up to him to decide. Knock down isn't necessary to trigger it.

Also Shuffle is affected by knock downs, not AoA. Hit a Crit or a Weak hit to knock them down and that is the trigger.

They are in the early game. I've only just finished the Kanji dungeon so I am due for new Chie Shoes.

I actually had better shoes from items I got from the first dungeon before I had the gems to buy those shoes, oddly enough. Maybe it's just luck of the draw?

Items from rare chest are heavily rng. There is a set of items you can roll from for each dungeon, but there's no guarantee you'll see a specific item even with 10 rare chests opened.

Some of these are very good tho. Some of the items you can make by selling rare materials as well. For example the female armor that gives 40 evasion and auto evasion/hit buff.

Even putting the game on very easy (does less damage, receives more damage) and being overleveled into the heavens he would still one shot everyone that wouldn't dodge with rampage. I think I read somewhere in gamefaqs years ago that his rampage attack was bugged.

Anyways just get a reflect physical, kick his ass and move on, no other boss has this much damage output, no need to stress yourselves over an unbalanced encounter.

I'm on hard as well and I went back to him at Level 24 when I was towards the end of the 2nd dungeon. He wasn't too much of a problem at that point since I had Rakshasa. I'd suggest doing something similar unless you really wanna push your luck trying to survive his rampages. If you have lots of physical mirrors, then it might be worth doing it early.

If you were playing on very easy and got oneshot, then you were underleveled and not overleveled. Nothing bugged about that attack, it just does heavy damage and can hit multiple times.

Also, dont neglect using equipment with higher defense.

I've never gotten a single physical mirror. I tried for hours but it simply doesn't exists in my Yukiko castle. Every rare chest gave me Beads or some Ring or Pin, or a bunch of Gentlemens Tux.

When does the Reaper spawn?
I heard chains ratting numerous times, haven't seen the Reaper a single time.
And I've probably spent more than 10h in dungeons by now.

I read that when you open a chest there would be a warning, never received such warning too.

With Contrarian King - get past lvl 20 to beat him. Debuff his attack, buff party defense.
Amount of Rampages he cast seems random, when I actually beat him he only cast one the entire fight which made it easy.

Once you hear those chains, go try to open a chest. That's when you should be warned about the Reaper and opening the chest will be a battle against him. It won't happen if you get into a fight with another monster or go to a new floor.

Specifically what the previous guy said, but only if the chest you opened is going to be a monster in a box. If it's not, you won't be warned and you'll just get an item and the chain rattle will stop.
