What is the point of playing the game at a higher difficulty...
If you can just switch the difficulty throughout with no consequence?

So you can enjoy the game at your own pace?

Very hard is the default difficulty, if you switch down you're a casual. You should be asking why there are easier difficulty levels.

But like, it isn't fulfilling playing at a higher difficulty if you aren't going to be rewarded for it.

The reward is the personal achievement of beating the game at a higher difficulty.

Do you need a pat on the head in the form of an achievement or something?

Participation awards were a mistake.

Why not? Are you playing because you're having fun or for a badge on your steam profile?

Because if you couldn't you could potentially waste a lot of time if it turns out to be too difficult?

For those that want the extra challenge, higher difficulties are the reward itself.

This game wouldn't interest me at easier difficulties. I'd have no reason to engage in the mechanics (like considering not taking a dungeon on all at once) if the game were too easy.

As far as the ability to lower the difficulty: well, I think that's there so that people who wrongly estimated themselves in either direction could adjust that.

Because I enjoy challenge.

You can play it on Very Easy if you don't understand the mechanic or don't enjoy the gameplay. People who do want to play the game and undestand the mechanic will play on higher difficulty. This is video game, not a book.

It's not about reward. It's about how you like to play it.

It's more enjoyable when you know and use what the game give to you to the extend but it also make the game too easy. it is fulfilling in itself for me at least

Well, I finished the original version several times on high difficulty, so now I just wanted to relax and I chose "very easy" for first playthrough of golden)

So people can enjoy it how they like. Someone might find normal to be too easy because maybe they've played the game before or are familiar with the series and they need that extra difficulty to make it a challenge. Games that are too easy are not really fun. It's much more rewarding to win a boss battle when it was actually really tough and you had to put some work into it. If you have this experience on normal, great. Others don't.

You want challenges, commit to them yourself - no need for them to be hardwired into the system unless you lack discipline or want to just brag.

Remember when games didn't have trophies or achievements and choosing a higher difficulty didn't offer any rewards aside from the personal satisfaction of beating a particular challenge? Yeah, you can just put it o Very Easy, breeze through it, get all the achievements, and have the same % complete as someone who plays Very Hard, but in the end does it matter? Games are meant for you to have fun, to challenge yourself, and to have a good time. Achievements are pointless.

Plus, for an RPG like this you might choose the highest difficulty and realize that halfway through you're way underleveled and don't have fun with the grind. If it were hardwired in your save, oops looks like you need to redo anywhere from 20-50 hours allllll over again to get to where you were. With this, at least you can enjoy the story at your own pace. (Plus, you might learn way later on the only difference between Hard and Very Hard is that you only gain 1/3rd of the exp and money in V. Hard and that doesn't actually make it "harder" so much as just more a grind so you lower it to hard just for the challenge without grind. Or tweak the difficulty exactly how you want it! I personally keep the lower EXP but keep money gains the same since to min-max your s. links you NEED that money to have the right persona in your list)
