SONG OF HORROR

What's the deal with all the one shots?
I just bought this game and I think that it is a lot of fun (it feels like I'm playing a ghost movie) and I was really surprised to see a modern horror game released with fixed camera angles. I am playing on the EAP difficulty and I can't help but think that one shots in a game like this is kind of lame.

The game to me feels like it is about exploring a spooky house, solving the puzzles and dealing with the horror, which is cool. But the game punishes you for your curiosity, which I think is lame.

I'll admit I frigged up as Alina by clicking on the door on the second floor. I just wanted to see what happened. Whatever.

Ettiene died to the hearbeat mechanic.

Sophie got one shot by walking into I think Saul's room?

Alexander got one shot by draining a tub full of black water lol.

I do not want to seem like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but I am a little butthurt. Looking forward to finish EP1 and playing the rest though. Despite the one shots and "perma" death, I think that this one of the best horror games I've ever played.

You can play on ETA Hoffmann level which allows you to reload a checkpoint whenever you die.
I'm guessing you've never played an adventure game did you? This kinda stuff is standard. Hell at least this one gives you some pretty big hints as to when something is dangerous and is trying to encourage you to watch your step.

Yeah I saw that, but reading the description for the Lovecraft difficulty makes me think that the frequency and intensity of the scares scale with difficulty? I'm just butthurt about having to start over, but I think I comprehend the devs intentions with the one shots now.

Alinas death was my fault, and I figured something bad would happen. I guess I should have listened to the sound of what was behind the door to Saul's room for Sophie, so that is also on me (I would have gone in after hearing voices/crying anyway lol), but what hints were there for Alexander to not drain the tub of black water? It seems pretty standard horror cliche that dares the survivor to put their hand in and find out if there is anything in there. I thought that upon draining it I might find a puzzle item.

Anyway, I think the point of the one shots is to increase tension by encouraging the player to be extremely careful, which I appreciate. I will stick with EAP difficulty.

Yeah, but the character's dialogue gives you a hint that you shouldn't, talking about how they really, REALLY don't want you to stick their hand in there. That's the hint that you should be more careful with that and is kind of a smart way because other times they will ask but seem willing.

You don't think that it is easy to interpret this as "well I don't really want to put my hand in there because I'm scared but maybe there is a puzzle item in there" ?

That one got me too. I tried using a bunch of items to try and fish around in there first like the metal rod but it wouldn't let me, the chances that there was something in there I needed was too high to resist. I'm not a fan of the one shot deaths so far either, once I've lost a couple of characters it encourages me to look up some spoilers so I can avoid dying again, I don't want to risk having to start the episode from the entire beginning. I feel like the risk of dying from the gameplay portions(where you can avoid death by doing the quicktimes) is high enough on their own that they don't need the one shots to give tension. I'm only on the first episode though.
they even said it in the game... ''curiosity killed the cat''
LOL, im ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ living for this game, if only silent hill could be remade and give it a variety of monsters and deaths and emotional instabilities, i would be sold

drain the tub also your fault because you don't have to drain it as long as there's something else to do or other areas to explore

Yes, it was my fault for clicking the button.

Anyway, I just finished episode two on EAP. I started with Rene and he "died" in the basement to the door mechanic (I screwed it up after not playing for about a week due to work). I came back as Etiene and all was going well until I was in a small hallway and heard a loud *click*. I proceeded and was quite surprised to see a familiar face...I ended up finishing episode 2 with Erica.

I think this is possibly the best horror game ever made. 10/10.
That's what ruined the game for me, which is a shame because everything else is really well done. Horror is all about building tension, but dying over and over again totally breaks it. Most of them are pretty unfair too. I've been killed for opening a door despite not hearing anything when I listened at it. I even got killed for opening a door that didn't even give me the option to listen. The bathtub is BS too. You have to fish something out of a toilet, why wouldn't there be something in the bathtub? I'd much rather reach into a bathtub than a toilet.
In my opinion to be fair, worrying about whether it was safe to interact with something does add something to the game. For instance, finding a uv light shining on a creepy looking painting makes me worry about whether I should take the lightbulb out, or if that bulb is keeping the painting contained and removing it will be bad. Or taking something out of a statues mouth, whether the statue will cut off my hand, etc.

But the main problem that I have with the game is how unfair the deaths feel. I don't like the idea of removing the possibility of death entirely as that's a big part of tension in the game, but too often the deaths feel unfair. For instance, I was attacked in a stairwell that was in the middle of places to hide and so got grabbed before I could reach one of them, that happened to me twice in the same episode.

Is this game hard? I noticed a few streamers play it recently, From the little I watched it managed to catch my interest. I have the knack for exploration, but this game seems to punish you for curiosity. I read in some of the reviews they added a mode without permadeath but doing that locks you out of some or most achievements, so that isn't ideal.

Also is it playable with keyboard and mouse or is the controller recommended? If controller does the DS4 button prompt icons appear or is it XBOX layout only?
You can play with keyboard and mouse, but it feels pretty bad. I'm playing with DS4 right now and it feels just like one of the old PS1/PS2 horror games. The button prompts are for Xbox controller though, but you get used to them pretty quickly and you don't even really think about it. I recommend DS4 if you have one.
