Solo - 1 Character Party
Will the game engine allow and cater for a one person party?

Idk about if game engine allows it (for mods etc), but the devs said that it's a game about 4-people group, not one person + companions.

Almost certainly not.

Because the game is based very closely on the D&D 5e ruleset, and that is a game based around a party. One character cannot do everything, and one character will be doomed in combat.

The Tutorial (which seems unskippable at this time) forces you to play as each of the four different characters to teach you different mechanics.

It's full party or bust.

Cheers. 4's not so bad I guess.

I would indeed like to be able to use a single character or a smaller party. The Devs had a different vision. I'm not the biggest fan of 5e D&D some of the design choices irritate me, but other than the rage inducing camera controls, I'm enjoying this a lot.

Having completed the early access, I believe you can engage about 90% of the fights solo (not sure you can beat them all solo though). Some fights trigger upon entry so you have no choice but to have all 4 characters in it. Most fights take place in small areas and would be impossible to kite. So Soloing most content is possible.. but successfully beating it solo would be unlikely.
Can someone please tell me if the answer here is, "No, you are forced to use 4" or "Yes, you can use 1 or 2 characters even though it may be difficult or impossible"? Also, if it does allow less, is the XP split only among those in party, or is it fixed per party member regardless of how many there are?

You are forced to have 4 characters in your party. You can decide to only use 1 or 2 of them if you want but the others are going to hang around as potential targets

The Community Expansion mod allows for it in custom dungeons, but in DnD solo characters get stomped into next week because of a simple thing known as the Action Economy.

Also, XP gains are static even with the Community Expansion, a Solo character or a party of 6 all get the same XP no matter what, it isn't a pool of XP that is divided but rather an amount given to all party members.

The game forces you to use multiple characters in some parts, but not many. 95% of the game can be done solo.

Maybe a Lowlife Dex Stone Barb?

Also, there are some situations where you need 4 characters to simultaneously activate devices to progress a quest. Very odd that these mechanisms are designed to need 4 people (especially as at least one enemy party seems to be able to make their way through them with just 3 creatures).

It isn't you are forced to use a party of four. It is designed to play as a party of four.
The premise of the game is you create your party of four to go on an adventure.

You can't start the game session without having 4 characters selected so yes in the base game you are forced to have a party of 4. There might be a mod that allows it but most I have seen are focuses on getting even more party members, up to 6.

Not on;y do you have st start with a party of 4; but if members die off and they have the revive scroll on them? The game auto ends. No, you can not solo as in only 1 character, play the game.

Now, I suppose you could create your party of 4, only have 1 character actually DO anything, the other 3 hide/retreat etc and you could try and feign having a solo player character

Saying you are forced to create a party four is like asking are you forced to play basketball in this basketball video game.
It is a party based RPG that originally was for one player that now has co-op in it.
Since so many RPGs are one character and companions nowadays people seem to not understand it is four main characters.

Have any mods been made for those that want to adventure solo?
