It's usually when the game changes something graphically.
heresy!
I use a ton of mods and when there's an update, I simply remove the version.dll and verify my files. After that, my game is back to vanilla. None of the mods break my saves, so I can freely switch between my modded game and the vanilla game with no issues.
This.
It's true, some mods do break your game when cdpr patch.
But it's mostly the mods you can call the 'backbone' mods. The ones that do the heavy lifting. Frameworks.
CET, RED4ext, redscript, cybercmd, mod settings, native settings UI ect.
ArchiveXL and TweekXL too, tho slot of the time that's interdependency.
So yes, turn steam to "only update when I play the game"
Then make a shortcut to the Cyberpunk 2077.exe file and use that to start your modded game when there is a patch. You can still have steam running in the background to talk to your friends list too, but loose out on achievement and time played.
And, if you want to keep your setup saved (for example, want to save a copy of the game from before the expansion hits) you can just copy your game folder to another hard drive.
They use the same saves tho, so watch out for that.
The game sees saves inside folders in the 'Cyberpunk 2077" folder, so don't back them up inside there, you will get duplicates. Go up one folder to 'CDPR' and save them there.
I use two save mods.
'sort saves by lifepath and type' and 'named saves'
I can see all my Corpo's, Nomads and Streetkids by pressing E or if it's a quicksave, a manual save, endgame save or point of no return save with Q.
The named saves lets me name a manual save when I save it, so I use that to separate them into the names of the various chars I have.
Then when I want to change over playstyle I look at the number on the named file that's my last manual save, write that down, move that save to its named folder.
Ether move a different saved character file over from its folder, or make a new one.
I save once each character as I start the Sandra Dorset mission. This is their 'base save'
Once again after waking up in the shower after the heist.
Sometimes I make a backup before the heist, incase I need more skill (like with a throwing knife only trial, but I didn't have enough hp)
Means I don't have to always go thru certain parts of the story if I don't want to. But can try again on that character if I want to do similar but not exactly the same of a run.
That all being said, though, 1.62 is just a graphic update as far as I can tell, so it can go either way in that case.
