We didn't have to be V, design mistake.
The first person gun-slinger genre is best exemplefied by Fallout New Vegast, IMHO.

I have long appreciated that CDPR wanted to give V a defined identity in order pursue their narrative themes.

However, I think this took away as much as it added to the narrative. Half way through Cyberpunk, you easily kill untold enemies and accrue enough money to buy any gun you wish.

I really think CDPR walked away from Cyberpunk 2077. just look at the MOD potential that could have been CDPR's shining contribution to the game. Even I come up with Ideas for the game that outshine what I have.
FNV is a bad comparison; Courier 6 is an established character with an established past, as revealed through Lonesome Road.

What spurs V on to acquire greater money and materials than he ever had before is his desperation to survive the Johnny Silverhand implant which is slowly killing him. Narratively, V has a meteoric rise and fall that shapes the entire city (perhaps the world) for presumably decades. He goes from a street thug to assaulting Araska Tower in less than a month.
V is also just really, really good at killing people in a town where you can make a lot of money by killing people.

Some people here probably don't get what you're saying but I do. Yes it would've been a lot more fun if it was "like that" however they wanted a defined storyline for the player to experience.
