That said, while some general concepts are the same, the plot of 2077 is significantly different than the Johnny Mnemonic story/film.
I bet the director have an hard on this guy he has to put every keanu movie reference in this game.
But again, even then, other than a few general concepts, they're different stories.
Lo-Techs lived up under the caps of mega-geodesic domes and favored canine replacement implants from doberman teeth, not on some broken bridge (that was from a much later Gibson novel).
Johnny wasn't dying from the implant, but the mob wanted to kill him for what was stored on it.
Molly Millions - AKA Sally Shears with her mirrored shade implants was introduced in that story.
