Crazy how far this game has come.
Played day one and it's genuinely insane how far the game has come over the years. Great job!

Outside of knowing CDPR's other games, nothing in the game's store page says story game. It does say that you're a merc fighting for survival, but that doesn't translate to story, as it would simply be seen as a theme at a glance.

Sorry to say, but you're wrong on this. Er, imo.

It is the responsibility of the buyer to do their due diligence before committing to a purchase. I’m just going to say it as it is quite frankly:

I’ve never really understood this “shoot first and ask questions later” mentality that a certain group of buyers have.

We live in an age where information is available literally at our fingertips. If this person can make a post here complaining about the amount of story in a story driven game, they can take 5-10 minutes out of their day to research the game (even just superficially) before pulling the trigger.

People already do this whenever they buy a house, a car and even a PC; they do their research and maybe they’ll inspect it in person before pulling the trigger on the purchase. Now obviously a video game isn’t on the same scale as a house, car or PC but the same basic principles still apply:

Do your due diligence. Caveat emptor and all that.
Yep, no doubt . There's no excuse for not doing one's homework prior to purchasing a game.

In the end, there's plenty of info out there. Videos, reviews, forums, search engine. Sure, I'm not disputing what you say in the least. I specifically meant at a glance though, literally ignoring CDPR's other games, the videos and just reading the description.

As one mentioned though -> RPG <- should also be a obvious sign. Heck, I skimmed right over RPG haha, so that mess up is on me.

Really? Nothing?

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in the dark future of Night City...

Adventure? RPG? Two sub-/genres that are known to have absolutely no story whatsoever.

EXPLORE THE CITY OF THE FUTURE
Night City is packed to the brim with things to do, places to see, and people to meet. And it’s up to you where to go, when to go, and how to get there.

BUILD YOUR LEGEND
Go on daring adventures and build relationships with unforgettable characters whose fates are shaped by the choices you make.

Yeah, totally sounds like a shooter on rails... might as well be Doom. /s
Yea true, RPG is right there to be seen, and a clear indicator.

Sometimes playing devil's advocate can have merit, Zero. In this case, you're stretching it, choomster. (no hostility meant towards you) ;)

You have a brain. You have a computer. You have access to information. Everything you need at your fingertips before pressing "buy". Tonkonst unfortunately shot himself in the foot.

Hopefully he'll learn and put those key pressing skills to use and see what he's getting into before diving into anything again.

This game is phenomenal. It's everything I have ever wanted in a game. I'm glad they didn't just drop it after launch.:Catexec:
Indeed .

edit:
Also, thanks everyone for pointing it out. Unfortunately, I sometimes miss some details, but have no problem retracting or correcting myself, in the event of a mess up.

Buys a story game and complains about story. What did you expect?

There are a lot of story games that are good. This though feels slow and boring. You listen to more NPCs talk than actual gaming. At least Rockstar (and others) know how to keep it fun and interesting...

You sure about that?

I agree, it has come far, but that "far" is still far from promised.
The gameplay tries to mix multiple genres and ends up under-delivering in each one. The story is cool, though. The story can be a bit restrictive at times to the point where they could have just as easily made in a linear story instead of having story-related choices or multiple endings, but its an interesting presentation of the Cyberpunk genre with excellent art direction, acting and pacing...

...Gameplay is kinda mid though. Story is great, though.

In no trailer, in no info-text or review do they say that you will spend more time listening to dialogue than playing the game. There is no indication of how slow and boring the endless conversations will be either. The dialogues aren't even entertaining or interesting. Just slow and low on energy. At least some game developers know how to keep the dialogues interesting and fun. Rockstar is one.

Many called it "GTA in the future". No. Just no. Not even close. GTA was fun and entertaining. So was RDR2.

I'd contest you on that. Cyberpunk 77, GTA (Specifically GTA V) and RDR all have a significant portion of time that is spent in what is essentially just a semi-interactive movie. Those are bad examples.
But I do agree with that criticism. CP77 holds your hand tightly very often when it comes to telling its story, which is annoying since it even underminds its own roleplay aspects by forcing you to simply view the story instead of participating in it.

I'm forever the outlier I suppose who was satisfied on day 1 and just sees the additions since then as gravy (other than the expansion, which I'm only finally now getting into gradually, and is obviously much more substantial.) I've never seen any of the additions as fundamentally transforming the game in terms of how it felt for me to play it on a moment to moment basis.

They're all extremely welcome, especially some of the more immersive things like NCART working now and the arcade games and the additional apartments etc. And I do prefer the new skill and perk trees, etc. don't get me wrong. But fundamentally, the core experience at the heart of the game still feels like it always did to me. Which was always enough for me.

I started with 1.5 when it was already stable. It's done a lot since then already. 2.x was another learning curve, but 1.5 was a learning curve for me already.
Bought the game and beat it on release, didn't have too many bugs but yeah replaying it now is almost a completely different experience. Way better graphics, performance and mods are chef's kiss.

This is by far one of the best RPGs out there. I'd consider it on par with Red Dead Redemption 2. A litt below that level of quality but then again that game had how many years and what kind of budget? So yeah, not a fair comparison lol.

  • I HATE that there's no updated 3rd party character builder that comes close to what it was like pre 2.0
  • I don't like it took 2 years to be playable.
  • I don't like how the street traffic depends on your system specs.
  • I HATE that there's no updated 3rd party character builder that comes close to what it was like pre 2.0. wait i said that. yes it's that bad.

Other than that. I like it.
Shame I can't play 2.0 until there's a new character builder, but maybe one day.

This is probably the best looking best performing game out right now.
On using a 4080+ or on GeForce NOW, the game runs well 4K HDR on max settings.

My first playthrough was on v1.62 very hard
Second playthrough was on v1.62 hard ironman (if I die it's gg)

I can't touch ironman in 2.0 without a proper character builder.
I can tell you very hard 2.0 ironman is easier than hard 1.62 ironman

Have you even played past Act-1? Or did you just get to the Dex limo ride, met with Evelyn, and then called it quits like everyone else who makes this false argument?

Chippin' in as well as the first half of the final mission are good examples. There's tons of missions where you're just stuck talking and it feels like forever. The mission where you crucify a guy, the one where you meet with Judy to try out the ninja dolls, and so on.

While there is still a lot of actual gameplay from a relative stand-point, the game still frequently takes control out of the players' hands for the sake of story telling.
