Doubtful as that would screw with any scripted sequences involving cars.
Realistically it sucks that it affects OP in such a way, but most driving is down on the right side.
Sadly, most of the world drives on the right side.

I have never seen an option in a game to change it to 'our' way of driving.
The more serious issue is that you can make the mistake out on the road in real life.
My best advice might be that when you get into your RL car just stop for a few seconds and take a breath before you head out. Safe driving mate.
As far as the game goes though I actually prefer to use the motorbikes that way I can split the traffic and when i stuff that up it can make for a good screenshot. (I'll find one)

Good Luck and have fun in the game.
I guess I will take a break from real life driving while playing the game. As a workaround for the issue. I'll let my wife drive meanwhile.
I had a real life scary moment when it was really heavy rain on an unfamiliar suburban road and I drove to a wrong side of the road from a gas station, saw the light of an approaching vehicle... I stopped playing GTA after that.
Maybe he doesn't have the driving hours you or I might hold, let's not discourage him.
He realised what he was going and fixed it, thankfully no-one got hurt. Call that one a life lesson.
In game experience definitely alters my perception of reality somewhat. After playing Witcher 3 I actually started to pay attention to the color of various flowers growing near my home. It ended pretty fast after I stop paying attention to this in the game and started to collect everything I can reach.
I remember in my university years I was strafe moving around the corners of our university hostel after playing Doom 2.
