Can CDPR actually fix the a.i. ?
Preferred to hear from someone who actually has knowledge in this realm. Can the following be fixed?
Let's steer clear from the b.itching-vomit in this discussion we all know what the issues are at this point, but i'm genuinely wondering. Can this be fixed?

Can a patch/update rework-
1. the police teleporting in, not chasing you or getting in vehicles to chase you,, standing in the same place always?
2. the total inactivity from npcs with anything you do except to huddle and cry (like jumping on their heads, pointing a gun in their face, etc.)?
*3. the drivers unable to go around your car or leave the 1-line track they're scripted to. Drivers all jumping out of their car at the same time and just crouching instead of running, or fighting you, or running you over?
4. the lack of any interaction with you at all other than 1 line repeats.

How much, if any of this, can actually be reworked and patched? Because at this point i might just hold off putting any more time in until it does.. I've had my fair share of "OKKAY" moments that i won't disclose atm.

toolong:: "numerical increase (and the added ability to kill them) over the same kind of AI behavior The Witcher 3 had." stated in thread answer below sums it up to me.

1. This would require them to write routines for police pathing and modifying the existing vehicle chase routines (police can actually pursue you in vehicles already, it just works horribly.) It can definitely be done, but it is a much more substantial amount of work than you should expect from a "patch." It also has to be tested, as it can affect lots of other things in the game, since it needs to work globally throughout the city. This is more like an overhaul and a free content update. If it happens, it will be in future free DLC, not in an optimization and bug fix patch. While I hope this happens, I'm 50/50 on whether they would actually invest the time to do it. They may. We'll see. I believe they should. It's one of my biggest criticisms of the game.

2. This too would require them to write routines and create animations. Same issues as above, although they might be able to get around this by simply giving pedestrians the AI enemies have once a weapon is pulled on them but make it random. E.g. Let them have less HP than enemies, but have a certain percentage chance to start using the animations and combat behaviors the enemy AIs do, and have them spawn random weapons. Not sure how feasible this is though. Again, they have to test all of this as well, since we're talking about a huge number of NPCs on screen at the same time, and that has performance (among other) implications. That might be why they don't do more, honestly.

3. Same issues as above, except for the driving itself as an isolated case. It's conceivable that the driving can actually be fixed a bit more easily, in theory. There's already pathing and physics for vehicles, we can see it working sometimes. It just gets stuck sometimes and fails to work if traffic jams are bad enough. They can tweak the existing pathing to at least make vehicles better at escaping from traffic jams. The other elements you mentioned here though are really the same issues as in #'s 1 and 2 just in different contexts, and the same obstacles and challenges apply.

4. This is basically as intended, whether people like it or not, so I doubt this will be changed. This is the very same random fodder NPC AI we saw in the 2018 footage. It's just a numerical increase (and the added ability to kill them) over the same kind of AI behavior The Witcher 3 had. Limited contextual behavioral routines, walk cycles, and district-specific clothing. That's all this game was ever going to be, it was never going to be Skyrim or Shenmue. Random NPCs are just fodder. We knew that all along. (At least some of us did.)

Maybe they can, but should they? That would be like adding stealth option to Doom Eternal.

Don't harm civilians and you won't have issues with police.

Watch his video on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h0Ghxgrh6k Basically they need to rewrithe the whole ai code in this game. I'm sure it can be done with time.

1. Many of the things you mentioned don't apply to AI routines
2. The only game in which each NPC has a simulated neural network (each faction has a different one) is "The Division" series. But this is made by real AI developers and not gamedevs

I think some aspects attributed to the NPC's can be improved such as pathing but there is so many other issues such as animations, general behaviour and a lack of dynamics, that it would take a lot of work. The AI largely acts as placeholders currently and almost pre-2010 quality. I'd actually say it's some of the worst I have seen an open world game.

The police need significant conceptual improvement where they don't teleport right in front of you when triggered and that they also have a dynamic role in the world. Pedestrians are just there for immersion - you have limited interactivity with them and when you do, they either get in the way or act stupidly.

I don't think this will be worked on anytime soon as it's not really a priority issue from what I understand. I would just continue where you are and try and limit your interactions with them because the NPC's don't play any viable role in the city other than being a visual inclusion.

I guess the driving AI is the real priority. Pedestrians... well, that's not nearly as important IMO, they're just supposed to be there as a sort of filler anyway.

Excellent responses. I sure hope at least a few of these are addressed. So pathing perhaps & police but not likely the others?
The game itself shines in so many ways but where it doesn’t, wow it reeeallly doesn’t.

LOL to the guy asking if it should.. Do you understand how video games work? Is this your first open world game? The AI in this game is atrocious and is a technical embarassment. AI in the ps3 era was better than this game.

steam discussions are broken af right now :/

Yes it’s possible to fix because they never implemented the work to begin with. They rushed to release it when really should have been ready mid 2021.

I suspect that when they realized that they are running out of time, they implemented it in the fastest way that they could think of (what is currently available)

I also think something similar happened in terms of braindances, ironically you can buy braindances but you can't use them, they are useless objects on your inventory.

Not very likely no, I mean in theory it might be possible depending on where the issues lie be it coding shortcuts, their engine unable to handle it or the fact it needs to run on last gen consoles. With that said though, I doubt they will spend the resources on that as that is some very resource intensive stuff that while even though this is an especially bad example, many companies struggle with and need outside help or pour loads of dev time and money into.

It's possible, just takes time. Though quite embarrassing that much, much older games had better AI even if rudimentary
SonaGate2 Dec 15, 2020 @ 2:33am
they said the AI is bugged, not intended to work like this
