FX-8350 too old?
Anyone think this CPU will be too old to run it? I've seen it at the minimum for some games, but I can still run everything except Wolfenstein 2 (Because my GPU doesnt have enough memory). I upgraded to the GTX 1660 but upgrading the CPU would be too expensive. There are only like two FX processors above mine and the Ryzen series uses a new socket type so I'd have to upgrade pretty much everything.

Personally I'm pretty frugal with upgrades. Cant believe all these people keep dropping almost $500 on a graphics card lol. No offense people, just want my money to go a lot further than that.

Oh my! Don't buy at release and put that money towards an upgrade.
AvrorA Jun 13, 2019 @ 11:03am
Why you think its too old?
Even mine FX8320 not bad. Its an 8-core processor, with huge cooler it capable of 4.1GHz.

you know, pure high frequency doesn't help. Things like instruction sets are way more important.

It's simply too old. 8 cores or not, 4ghz or not, it can't compare to Ryzen.
Engels78 Jun 13, 2019 @ 11:16am
I know the pain... I had i5 3570k... So Intel so Zero chances for upgrades as socket in Intel is only for one or even half generation only 😝 I had DDR3 Ram!
So I collected money and bought R5 2600, then my friend borrowed money for MSI x370 Mobo and I sold CPU... So I bought RAM. Then I sold old Mobo and return money to friend and then I sold old RAM and... Had cash for me to have money return from CPU... So it cost me like 60-80$ finally 😁 So like new game and a old one 😉 You have 10 months for upgrade... I PreOredered CP2077 and now I am collecting money for new GPU...

I have an 8370.

Will we be able to play it? Yes. Will we enjoy it? I don't know yet.

But I plan to upgrade before it releases.

Having more cores is like having more RAM. After so many/much, having more makes no difference.

$500 is quite great for a GPU now, top of the line is $1200. Just upgrade your PC lol
peremptor Jun 13, 2019 @ 2:53pm
Depends on your GPU and what resolution and target framerate you going for. I would think for 60 fps gaming it's going to be good enough. I mean it's got 8 threads and even though the ipc is relatively poor compared to the newer CPUs... it's good enough for most games still.

If you want to upgrade though that 3rd gen ryzen with 6 cores/12 threads thats going to retail for around 200 bucks would be an amazing upgrade and that should serve you well for gaming for years to come.

If you want to be frugal never upgrade your CPU unless you are also buying a new mother board and RAM (because you have to because new socket/DDR). FX is so outdated you would be insane to buy anything from that line of processors. I went from a FX-6300 to a Ryzen 1800x right before 2nd gen came out. Companies were trying to get rid of their stock before the 2nd gen came out and I got a good deal. Same with the high end GTX 1080 I got for $430 on clearance when everyone was pre-ordering RTX's. So timing can go a long way. Otherwise you want to stay close to current gen because that is usually the best bang for your buck. Old computer tech doesn't really reduce significantly in cost. Really you can just get the new stuff for about the same price. Excluding great timing like cited above where companies are panicking to get rid of overstock.

I feel like you could benefit greatly from the Best Value benchmark charts by Passmark. When I'm trying to get get good value and I'm on a budget I always take a look at this chart.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html

The Ryzen 5's are pretty high on that chart so you know they are a good place to start looking and comparing to other CPU's. We then take that to our high end benchmarks

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Comparing a FX 8370 for $123 vs a Ryzen 5 2600 for $144. With the Ryzen benchmarking 51% higher. That is a huge performance boost! Sure you will need new RAM and motherboard but those will also give you a performance boost.

You probably want to shop around more then I just did with this combo but for a bit over $300 you can get Mobo, RAM and CPU that would be a huge performance bump for you.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.3845864

I wont pretend to know what kind of money you have to throw around at upgrades. I personally like to upgrade my CPU/RAM/MOBO every 3-5 years. Same with my GPU but neither of these things at the same time. When I stagger my upgrades it often is easier to handle keeping my machine up to date. Whether it's the CPU/RAM/MOBO, GPU, Monitors, Case, KB&M, Hard Drives, ETC. Plus things like Case, PSU, KB&M, Speaker often last me a long time. Same with monitors. I have a nice Samsung 4k I just got last fall for $300. Yet it sits beside my newest 1080p that I got a few years back.

I hoped this post helped. I know it helped me kill the last bit of my work shift. I wish you the best and happy gaming!

I think some of you misunderstood. I'm not looking to buy the 8350, its the processor I already have. I built my PC six or seven years and have yet to see any game where my processor isnt good enough. I'm not picky so I dont care about graphics too much. things look fine on low if you arent a picky bastard lol.

I'm also planning on taking a trip to Ireland next year so spending the $400-500 on a new CPU, Mobo, and Ram (plus maybe a PSU depending on the connectors/power requirements. pretty sure 650 watts for mid-range is still plenty but I could be wrong) is a bit too much atm. I'm in the US so thats a pretty expensive trip. Only reason I care in this case is I'm way too hyped for this game and would be pretty pissed if I couldnt play it at release.

oh and I work full time and try to workout as often as possible so I dont have that much time for games. I'll make time for cyberpunk, but just more context in case anyone thinks I'm just being cheap lol. Its hard to justify hundreds in upgrades when you dont play that many new games.

Thanks for the info! as I said above, I'm not looking at buying the FX line. I just momentairly forgot how many PC gamers actually stay up to date on hardware (personally I only came to the platform for the mods and stayed for the 60fps and customization of settings. Not picky with graphics cards and the less I have to pay and longer I have to upgrade the better lol) and thus are already aware needing to upgrade would require upgrading almost everything.

Kinda annoyed that I have to get a new mobo, but at the same time its been 6-7 years and I still can run pretty much everything so I shouldnt really complain. Its just harder now because I was in the middle of college back then and took a while to find a good job after, so I havent had 6-7 yrs of building up savings to be able to upgrade easily. Plus I try to do the most with the least money as possible in general and am currently more focused on maximizing savings and eliminating debt, so I go as long as possible without upgrades. Doesnt help that my interests are extremely varied so I cant really dump a lot of money into any one hobby.

Every $50 on pc parts is $50 less for blurays, vinyls, concert tickets, plane tickets, guitar gear, movie tickets, ect, ect,ect haha

If you can play Witcher 3, you can play Cyberpunk 2077.

CP2077 uses The REDEngine 4, Witcher 3 uses the REDEngine 3.

The only difference between the engines is that it's more streamlined for crowds, and has much better support for graphics and DX12.

EDIT: If you have a good enough GPU, I should have added.

I'm totally a CPU > GPU person. I do play a lot of simulation games though and so the CPU is king. You should be good on PSU. A good one can last 7-10+ years. Often that is even the warranty. I have a 650W and it's severed me well. I did have to make sure I got Nvidia GPU though since those eat less power then AMD GPU. I'm running it on the hardware I previously cited. If you do want to check if your PSU will meet your upgrade needs there are some great PSU calculators online.

I hope you have a lot of fun on your trip! I don't get out of the area I live much. With a new baby, pets and a new [to me] home. I'm always busy with them, gardening and home improvements/repairs. It doesn't give me much time to game.... or sleep. Which makes it easier to not throw a lot of money at games. I have such a back log that unless I really want to play the game right now. It's often a waste of money. Too many times I've bought a game on sale and never played it. I think I'm skipping the pending summer sale so I can put that money toward some things I want for my gardens.

I would say if your computer meets your needs now. No rush to upgrade. The longer you hold out the more significant the upgrade will feel. Gaming is great and a fun get away. Yet I respect that you understand there are more important adventures in life. Once again I wish you a fun and safe trip.

I would agree that you 'can' run Cyberpunk 2077 if you ran Witcher 3 on say medium or higher at at a comfortable frame rate.

However, there is no denying that the Witcher 3 is years old now, and Cyberpunk features 'much' larger environments, better textures, and more npcs on screen at once that the Witcher 3.

It 'will' be more taxing.
