Quake II RTX

Why Q2 RTX heats up my RTX 4070 more than any other game
My 4070 runs pretty cool, in the low 60s for most games including Cyberpunk on ultra. But old crusty quake 2 RTX sends it over 70c. Its smooth 120+ fps but why does the simplest game run the hottest?

Simplest? It's pure RTX game unlike most other games.
Try running Cyberpunk with path tracing technology preview.

Well Quake 2 RTX is not a WOW to me in visuals its ok but not to the level of Cyberpunk and many other games. Sure the lighting is better that open gl but not cyberpunk level.
I did try that new path tracing and not hotter than quake 2 RTX. Its not ready for prime time but maybe in the future, too much of a performance hit vs Ultra and looks the same (yes on stills it can look better in some areas) but subtle.
Probably its because the game bounces off of light between every element in the room 8x. It's excessive not better.

Quake2 RTX is like 90%+ Fully pathtraced image. Cyberpunk with raytracing is not. It's 90% Rasterized and 10% RTX.

There is a huge difference. And should demonstrate to you how much horsepower it takes to pathtrace entire images.

I Limited my RTX 4090 to Maximum 60 Frames in Nvidia Control panel, and it kept the Temps down, not to mention the fans are much quieter now

I remember my first RTX card...

Dude it has more ray traced elements than Cyberpunk. This game is like a ray trace tech demo so they went all out with those particular effects, which work a GPU pretty hard. Cyberpunk may look better but it literally doesnt utilize the ray tracing to the same extent
You obviously aren't playing Cyberpunk on path tracing mode (RT overdrive) which, contrary to the above posts, has even more ray tracing effects than Quake II RTX. However, Quake II RTX has more RT effects than Cyberpunk on Psycho RT mode.

Quake II RTX has around 100 RT dynamic light sources per scene (source[developer.nvidia.com]) and uses an older global illumination method with fewer bounces. Cyberpunk's path tracing mode uses the latest and greatest ReSTIR path tracing renderer, although with fewer ray traced effects than RTX Remix (source).

RTX Remix > Cyberpunk RT Overdrive, DOOM RT, Quake RT, Half-Life RT, and Serious Sam RT > UE5 Lumen > Quake II RTX and Minecraft RTX (far less rasterization than the hybrid UE5 but UE5's much higher light bounces make it look better) > Cyberpunk Psycho RT > Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition > everything else in terms of RT quality

Same here, Asus RTX 3080, every other game runs 50 or 60 C max this game, Quake 2 makes it heat up to 70 C exactly.

Why do you guys have good gpu's and don't know how to configure them or your computer to make it get a minimum of 60 fps. Are you guys console peasants?

Console peasants aren't really a thing anymore, it's PC peasants. Console gamers have RDNA 1.5 - almost RX 6600 to 6600 XT equivalents (vs the most popular GPUs on Steam being GTX 1060 and 1650), 8 core Zen 2 processors (also above most gaming PCs), they play at 4k resolution which is 4x that of most PC gamers, HDR, and they embrace ray tracing while PC gamers don't because they can't run it on their 2016-2017 GPUs.

You don't need to insult others to feel important and to feed your ego. Not everyone is so smart as you are. Instead of explaining the solution it's easier for you to degrade the ones who have the problem and maybe asked for help. You are disgusting piece one of a kind.

Your mother is a peasant. A PC and a console peasant combined in one. Instead of replying with a helpful comment your blown up true garbage personality surfaces and cannot resist to portray your true deformed grotesque inner self.

Simply revealing technical facts makes you very angry and emotional. You may wish to seek help.

It is strange when people with good hardware are so uninformed that they don't understand why a path traced game is so demanding.
