How scary is it? Amnesia style or Deadspace or....?
I'm a complete wuss at horror games in general, but I promised myself i'd eventually get this when it became super cheap.
Well... that time has come.
...and i'm just wondering what sort of scares am I in for? ;_;

Is it like.. jumpscare stuff? ..or is it more atmospheric?
Did it creep you out?
Is it not as bad as the trailers make it out to be?

its more about atmosphere than anything. It gives off a feeling of "something isnt right" vibe rather than jump scares or focusing on really creeping you out (not to say it doesnt have those moments). Its more like a Suspense/Thriller movie rather than Horror in the traditional sense.

It's like a cheesy horror movie with the atmosphere of a dark fever dream.

It's more atmospheric like amnesia, although instead of running from the monsters, you shoot them with what little ammo you have left.

I'm not one to really get into horror either, but games like Dead Space and Alan Wake are fine because they are more atmospheric than anything. Though, DS has it's fair share of jump scares...

Just know the point of the game will be to tell you a story while keeping you on the edge of your seat.

It's more like a soft-horror TV Show, the soundtrack, and ambient are AWESOME. :)

It's not scary but at the same time it's not a really confortable environment either.

I think it is scary and creapy. It constantly gives you the feeling of dread. I especially liked it when I was at the first lumber yard and turned on the radio and they were talking about the dog, then the music that came on afterward made the whole scene very creapy. Then the taken started talking about cooking dogs, suspensful. Several times in the game I was genuinely startled.

It's not like Dead Space. Alan Wake is not about jump scares. It has this ominous, threatening and dark atmosphere. And it's suppose to mess with your mind a little bit and think a little bit harder than in regular horror. It's psychological horror/thriller (almost wrote terror, haha). It's good if you like for example Stephen King's stuff, Shining, the Fog (like someone mentioned in another thread) and that kind of thing.
It's a really good game and the atmosphere is what makes me want to play it.

It's not scary in that sense. It's more creepy/unsettling, in my opinion...

It's not true Horror; there's no gore, no blood, no decapitations. It's surprisingly mild on violence.

What it lacks in gut wrenching blood-splatting visual effects, it makes up with its' gloomy atmosphere. You will get a sense of dread but it won't paralyze you with fear.

Alan Wake isn't horror, not even labled as such in the Steam store. It's a thriller. It is atmospheric, but never really scary, and I don't hink it was tryign to be.

I agree with people above. It's not really that scary, but my god the atmosphere is good. Especially if you like Twin Peaks :D I watched the whole series a few months ago and I guess I gotta play Alan Wake again. They share a lot in common.

However, the game can get your heart beating fast at some points, like if you run out of ammo, and are nearly dead and enemies keep spawning. It does get the Amnesia chase feeling when you're desperately trying to make it to the next light spot. Other than that (and that may not happen to everyone anyway), not scary.

No game is labelled as horror, by the way. I guess it's not a "real" genre. Like Amnesia is adventure game, Dead Space is a shooter, FEAR is fps etc.

It's more about making you feel hopelessness and dread, nothing really tries to scare you. Think King or Lovecraft not Carpenter.
