dying a hundred times the way i did in that spot was anything but fair or possible to me. i had to put the game on easy after almost 3 hours of trying to work that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fight. you end up having three sledgehammers and about 5 or 6 different guys with axes and sickles and it's just maddening. can't even take more than 5 hits without dying, and recovery time is just absurdly slow. not even a change with flares, which are apparently supposed to give you breathing room to heal when you're surrounded. this game is just all sorts of unfair in a few areas, this being the more frustrating of them all that i've come across. i don't even think i want to try Nightmare difficulty if i can't even survive this spot on Normal.

I didn't have much trouble with it in my playthrough, but I remember it gave me fits back when I first played it. Flares are a big help if you have any.
my biggest problem though IS the flares. they just don't do anything for you. repositioning is null because Alan move's so slow while holding a flare. healing doesn't really kick in either when flares are in effect, and the flares don't really do any kind of "withering" to an enemy's darkness a great degree in the few seconds a flare is active. flares were cool to use now and then, but in this particular instance, they were absolutely useless for me.
and to absolutely donkey kick me in the face, the game gave me a flaregun and 3 shots for it right after that. talk about game balance. i eventually got sick of dying so much and just put the game on Easy. it's a shame that of all the difficult moments in the game, THIS one almost at the end made me ragequit. at this point, i just wanna finish the game, do the DLC chapters, do American Nightmare, and then be done with this until next Halloween.
Main point of Alan Wake is imo the atmosphere and story anyway; Easy mode doesn't diminish either one. And there is a moment in one of the "special" episodes - The Signal, if I'm remembering correctly - which is even harder than this one. There are more environmental attacks in the special episodes which you HAVE to use - there isn't enough weapon ammo laying around. And there is one occasion (also in The Signal) where you're not supposed to fight the enemies at all, but run past them; problematic with Alan's short supply of stamina.
Dodge is working well - but it need good timig + you cant dodge over and over again, its impossible to dance between enemies without some break... Alan isnt martial artist, but writer... ;-)
