chapter 5 is just not possible
i'm at this area in chapter 5, which shows Alan getting knocked out of a helicopter with Barry and the cop lady riding to the other side of the plant or whatever, and i apparently have to find Cynthia Weaver. i got to the first Haven in this area and climbed the crates. and here's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. now, call me crazy, but if there are gas cans exploding, does it hurt the Taken immediately regardless of their Darkness, or does it react the same way as bullets? i have died over a hundred times at this particular part of the game simply because these sons of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are literally ganging up on me. flares don't last long enough for me to get any kind of healing in, and i die in 4-5 hits from every enemy. (and there's about at least 7 of these pricks.) it doesn't really help that my "flashlight" doesn't last longer than 3 seconds before i have to recharge it. by now, could i at least be given something other than the stock flashlight when this ♥♥♥♥ starts? i'm almost at the end of the fricking game here. i can't run away, i can't fight, i can't manuevre. does anybody have any advice for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you call a fight?

dying a hundred times the way i did in that spot was anything but fair or possible to me. i had to put the game on easy after almost 3 hours of trying to work that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fight. you end up having three sledgehammers and about 5 or 6 different guys with axes and sickles and it's just maddening. can't even take more than 5 hits without dying, and recovery time is just absurdly slow. not even a change with flares, which are apparently supposed to give you breathing room to heal when you're surrounded. this game is just all sorts of unfair in a few areas, this being the more frustrating of them all that i've come across. i don't even think i want to try Nightmare difficulty if i can't even survive this spot on Normal.

Sounds like you're talking about this part.

I didn't have much trouble with it in my playthrough, but I remember it gave me fits back when I first played it. Flares are a big help if you have any.

my biggest problem though IS the flares. they just don't do anything for you. repositioning is null because Alan move's so slow while holding a flare. healing doesn't really kick in either when flares are in effect, and the flares don't really do any kind of "withering" to an enemy's darkness a great degree in the few seconds a flare is active. flares were cool to use now and then, but in this particular instance, they were absolutely useless for me.

and to absolutely donkey kick me in the face, the game gave me a flaregun and 3 shots for it right after that. talk about game balance. i eventually got sick of dying so much and just put the game on Easy. it's a shame that of all the difficult moments in the game, THIS one almost at the end made me ragequit. at this point, i just wanna finish the game, do the DLC chapters, do American Nightmare, and then be done with this until next Halloween.

Throw the flare on the ground, don't try to hold it. I believe it is a tap of the middle mouse button, though it has been a while. Then circle strafe / dodge around the flare. They don't damage enemies much, but they do make them take a step back.

Main point of Alan Wake is imo the atmosphere and story anyway; Easy mode doesn't diminish either one. And there is a moment in one of the "special" episodes - The Signal, if I'm remembering correctly - which is even harder than this one. There are more environmental attacks in the special episodes which you HAVE to use - there isn't enough weapon ammo laying around. And there is one occasion (also in The Signal) where you're not supposed to fight the enemies at all, but run past them; problematic with Alan's short supply of stamina.

Of course its possible, even on nightmare difficulty. You have to use dodge, if you use it properly you can survive anything and its really easy.

dodge is only useful when it actually works, which for some reason it only works half the time. i beat the game already though. also, dodging doesn't help if you're boxed in, which i was in that particular scenario. unlike most games, i've learned you actually have to dodge away from the attack for it to work. i've tried dodging through attacks and it didn't work once. i don't mind them giving me so many enemies. i frankly enjoy shooting the little aholes. it's just when you have 3 larger Taken, and then you have about 7 all practically forming a wall and closing in on you, it just makes it more difficult than it needs to be, especially when you have a very enclosed area and really only one exit. yeah, i get the fact i suck at the game. but i died almost 30 times to that one part on Normal difficulty, not Nightmare. it felt like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to me.

Dodge is working well - but it need good timig + you cant dodge over and over again, its impossible to dance between enemies without some break... Alan isnt martial artist, but writer... ;-)

Don't drain the batteries in the flashlight. I only focus the light if absolutely needed because batteries can be hard to come by and only for 2-3 seconds TOPS. I usually circle and strafe. I use other items like flares and flash bangs if in a bind. Learn to dodge early on and master it quickly. It will be much easier later in the game.

Yeah, that particular section was a pain to me too. I eventually managed with some luck from the gas cannisters littered around the area, but they're not exactly the most reliable option either. While that was bad, my biggest frustration though was often getting attacked from enemies behind me that I had no way of knowing were there. Especially if you're in the process of focussing the flashlight, the camera zooms in tight to Alan and gives you next to zero view behind you. So many times I'll be in a fight only to get slashed a few times by enemies that I had no way of knowing were there.
Game is broken there dodge is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up even when i dodge the opposite way of there attack nope there attack animation stretches out and hits me like it doesnt physically hit but its like all of them are saitama from OPM even if misses the Backblast hits me im like what the f

Least when you get killed in here your right back at it, die in control and you may as well put coffee on and cook dinner.
