There will probably be a speech check of some kind. But it would impress me if they did make you choose. I like it when an RPG just hands you choices that are only grey. It grabs the players attention and makes them care, instead of defaulting to the obvious light side option.
I get it, and don’t disagree with the general concept. I just want them both in my party so I can observe their ideological conflict as it progresses throughout the game. Larian has said they are enemies. They’ve also positioned Karlach as generally “good”. I interpret EA Wyll as generally “good”. It just feels like the opportunity to observe two objectively good people in ideological conflict is rare in fantasy fiction. Usually the trope is that good wins because they band together when evil cannot, or good characters who are intractable in their opposing beliefs end up having one of them be wrong and dying for it right away.
Personally, I never liked the idea of Hexblade as a patron to begin with. A lot of people like to flavor the Pact of the Blade as you actually wielding your patron into battle, and that brings up some awkward questions about what happens if your weapon ever gets stolen or destroyed.
Traditionally, the black dude always dies first in horror stories. So why even bother getting attached in the first place?
I'll probably play as him since I like me warlocks and I wonder if he can somehow romance Karlach, but he's the weakest visual design of the origin characters, even accounting for Shadowheart's goofy yee yee ass haircut.
It is disappointing for me how shallow gamers get when it comes to companions though. They have to be pretty, they have to be buff, they have to be quirky, they can't be dull, can't be boring, and you kind of get that this whole thing is really just some kind of high-school dressup for a bunch of losers that want to hang out with the "cool kids", not some grand adventure at all.
There will be companions that will be left at base and never touched, or just the damage hitters will go in the roster and then it's just fantasy tourism with pretty girls and "bros".
EDIT: Of course, you need a straight-man type character as well to balance it, but don't expect people to be interested in that character as a companion if they have nothing interesting to say or look out of place in their party.
You shouldn't complain about people wanting "fantasy tourism" in what is ostensibly a fantasy vacation people want to take. Plenty of English majors are too far up their own asses to just write something fun and enjoyable.
Wouldn't surprise me if all the writers, including Swen contributed in rewriting Wyll. (Especially if they only had a couple months before BG3's release, which would help Kevin cause I think he wasn't feeling well back than.)
Don't know if this makes Kevin look worse in your eyes,, but he was the writer of the Red Prince.
Actually remember how I said a few comments back that Wyll is hunting Karlach for the devil lady? Well that seems to definitely be the case now,, because of this new video by gamespot.
Below you'll see the dialogue that was shown from it, or you can just click > here < to watch it on youtube.
Tav : "What's that supposed to mean? Lay it out plainly, Wyll." "Someone set you on Karlach's tail, I'd like to know who."
Wyll : "I can say only this,, Karlach's not the only one who's had a villain's knife held to their throats." "One night soon when we make camp, the veil will be lifted & I'll pay my penance."
By the way Larian made a typo on one of the dialogue choices towards Wyll,, but lets see if any of you spot 'it' on the video.
Nothing to me sounded like Wyll was getting darker, so I don't know what Larian said to make you feel that way? Even after they said he was hunting Karlach,, it never made me think "Oh Wyll is such a bad boy now."
For me I was like, "He must have good reason, & genuinely sees her as the villain instead." Little did we know it was actually the devil lady pulling his strings,, even from afar?
My theory is that Karlach's death would somehow increase the devil lady's health & power? Yet why would she care about Karlach right now,, when her only priority should be about getting rescued by Wyll?
Swen never said it was only the evil companions during early access,, & has publicly stated that "we’ve only put the evil & the neutral ones out there. We haven’t put any of the good characters in yet."
Wyll has the glow,, just like Bruce Leroy. ✨😎

^ What did you mean by this, & was that towards me?
It will lead to the devil lady's heart being purified. 💖
If anyone is a child-like hero,, then that award goes to Minsc.
That's why it will be awkward as hell if he's a romance option,, unlike Wyll who I doubt will make the ladies feel like they're hanging out with a 10 year old lol.
You must have been so disappointed when first hearing Mike Tyson than.
As for me the voice of Wyll didn't bother me, yet maybe it would have if I didn't get used to those type of voices before BG3 ever existed.
Don't worry though,, they actually recast a new voice actor for him & Karlach. (So both of them might sound better to all of your ears hopefully.)
A choice like that during BG3's finale would be interesting to me, & could imagine a situation similar to Dragon Age Inquisition.
It can be like that time when some people had to pick between Loghain & Hawke.
Keep in mind how Adam said, "they could become very good friends?" So there might not be much conflict at all,, & just a progression of positive banter that wouldn't have existed if Wyll just followed through with his original quest.
We could both be overthinking everything,, especially after seeing Wyll become apologetic towards Tav for his actions towards Karlach? Unless she holds a grudge still, or he's only pretending to be remorseful.
