Yeah, I was shocked to play Metro 2033 and sequels just to find out I can't even use the metro! Really unfair...
I believe they've mentioned in previous Thursdoids that ripping up railroad tracks is an intended way for the player to harvest large amounts of metal (and that you can even use chunks of rail as a makeshift anvil to jumpstart blacksmithing), so it'd be an interesting trade-off if it were also possible to use the rails for transportation...but only as long as no one goes and digs them up for resources.
I'm guessing you haven't played those games, lol. You use the metro in 2033 and one of the sequels takes place mainly on a train.
Doing it in Project Zomboid is pretty unreasonable though, I agree with you on that.
These objectives are annotated maps that the player has to figure out rather than actual Skyrim style game tasks.
Also they did show in one of the blogs being able to take apart the train tracks which will be great for servers that have a lot of players , not sure if it will help level up skills or not but if it does I think we will be seeing those being snacked up quite a lot. I know I for sure would over having random furniture eaten in the city/towns.
Second, if that's a train requiring fuel wich you would be able to get in the world, logically, why tf would these trains suddenly become unuseable just because a zombie virus appeared?
And third, - if you can ride cars in this game, then there could be another transportation method for resources or people too just because it makes sence.
Aside from cargo trains, if there would be passenger trains, it'd be interesting to see the NPCs using them roleplay-wise in the start of an apocalypse (for example, they arrive at Louisville train station, but when the train would have to depart from the station, the quarantine barrier around the city has been already set up, and going to the other side is impossible without, for example, breaking the quarantine border's fence wich is blocking the trailway tracks).
This system could be a little more complicated: these passenger trains could also have an interior to their cars where you could walk, and where the NPCs could navigate as well (somethign similar to RV's Interios mod we have rn)
Or this kind of a vehicle could be simply used by the players for transportation of something or someone, obviously.
To be fair, it's the United States. There's barely a rail network at the best of times.
