Project Zomboid

Train system
I think it'd be a cool idea to have a train system where instead of using cars you could use a train to move around the map aswell. It'd be slightly faster than cars but you would also need a metro card to get on and stuff.

how would that fit into a game set around an apocalypse with practically zero society left?

Yeah, I was shocked to play Metro 2033 and sequels just to find out I can't even use the metro! Really unfair...

maybe you could drive it I guess. Or if they add NPC's maybe the NPC's would drive it. it's just an idea

Maybe the Old West reenactment village could have one of those two-person pump cars from old movies, or enough educational blueprints that you could build one as a long-term project.

I believe they've mentioned in previous Thursdoids that ripping up railroad tracks is an intended way for the player to harvest large amounts of metal (and that you can even use chunks of rail as a makeshift anvil to jumpstart blacksmithing), so it'd be an interesting trade-off if it were also possible to use the rails for transportation...but only as long as no one goes and digs them up for resources.

I'm guessing you haven't played those games, lol. You use the metro in 2033 and one of the sequels takes place mainly on a train.

Doing it in Project Zomboid is pretty unreasonable though, I agree with you on that.

It would be nice, up until you derail the train, not sure how many there would be on the vanilla world, but there is only so many stops, also hope you don't have to worry about an oncoming train from another player...

Simple, you repair it and accomplish objectives to get the train back up and running, but systems can occasionally fail in order to avoid making the train too OP as transport.

These objectives are annotated maps that the player has to figure out rather than actual Skyrim style game tasks.

TBH, I am biased towards this suggestion because if nothing else, I would just like to be able to move the train cars in front of the depots outside Louisville out of the way of the buildings I want to use as a base. They're *right* in front of where I would place a door and would block LoS something fierce.

the game is playable just after society falls, so it could be possible to fuel a train and drive it without the train tracks being broken. not possible about a year later, and without player intervention

I dont even know if its possible within the engine to do something like this. But It would probably be better as a mod, IF it was possible, i think it could just be op in a way i guess.

Also they did show in one of the blogs being able to take apart the train tracks which will be great for servers that have a lot of players , not sure if it will help level up skills or not but if it does I think we will be seeing those being snacked up quite a lot. I know I for sure would over having random furniture eaten in the city/towns.

Gotta surprise ya, but you start in the beggining of the apocalypse and not in an aftermath of it so the engine of any vehicle is still useful in most cases - first

Second, if that's a train requiring fuel wich you would be able to get in the world, logically, why tf would these trains suddenly become unuseable just because a zombie virus appeared?

And third, - if you can ride cars in this game, then there could be another transportation method for resources or people too just because it makes sence.

Aside from cargo trains, if there would be passenger trains, it'd be interesting to see the NPCs using them roleplay-wise in the start of an apocalypse (for example, they arrive at Louisville train station, but when the train would have to depart from the station, the quarantine barrier around the city has been already set up, and going to the other side is impossible without, for example, breaking the quarantine border's fence wich is blocking the trailway tracks).

This system could be a little more complicated: these passenger trains could also have an interior to their cars where you could walk, and where the NPCs could navigate as well (somethign similar to RV's Interios mod we have rn)

Or this kind of a vehicle could be simply used by the players for transportation of something or someone, obviously.

Project Zomboid starts literally days after the beginning of the apocalypse, all the trains didn't magically stop working.

To be fair, it's the United States. There's barely a rail network at the best of times.

You really lost me on the metro-card. Why on earth would you need a metro-card? If that is just an attempt to "balance" having access to a train it feels really arbitrary and out of place.
