Large stones
I figured the best way to get stones is to find large stones, but where do you find them? I have a pickaxe but I am not able to use it on visible rocks and at 10 foraging I have not found any large stones either.

I've been finding a few, but the ones i have found have been from right clicking the random, loose rocks i see in the fields/forest around my base.
It is exactly as you two said, no need for a pickaxe. The large boulders cannot be interacted with, but clicking the smaller ones will sometimes yield large stones.

i cannot interact with the small stones when right clicking them?
When walking around, you may notice smaller stones, visually. You can right click them, and under Gardening, you'll see an option to pick up the stone.
You need a shovel to pick up the large stones.
on a secondary unpaved road
Among the visible stones lying around, there are 3 variants for small Stones (one including some Twigs), 2 versions for Large Stones, and one for Large Flat Stones. Either of those should be possible to collect without tools - as been noted, that can be done via Gardening tab in RMB context menu.

Tools like Club Hammers are only needed to collect deposits (limestone and flint atm), or to dispose of other objects, like broken birch stumps.
FYI I had an issue with this... When you right click look under/for Gardening....

You can just hammer out a tree stump? That is wild...

No, but you can carve it out using a Pickaxe.

Literally spent like an hour or 2 trying to figure out why I couldn't pick up large stone, and instead would get regular stones. The way it's designed currently makes no sense.
You can get the large stone in 2 ways.
1: you see random stones on the ground (without foraging) which you can right click and remove which gives you that stone (also works with logs)
The sprite shows a rather small stone, but in reality that is a big stone under all that grass.
2. Forage around.

No need for pickaxes or club hammers, those are used to mine those mineral nodes (also just laying around).
Those giant boulders can't be interacted with BUT do count as a crafting surface.
Damn, I had no idea you could dig up the visible stones. I have to do that on my next new run to get early blacksmithing up faster. What I've been doing is going along roads and highways foraging with stones focus.
the rocks on the ground are not random, the graphics for each type is pretty consistent. the ones that have a more triangular upward bulge with a small rock next to it are large rocks, dont need a pick for these. GL picking them up though.

right click them > Gardening > Remove Large Stone (or stone etc.)

Extract Minerals with a pick or chisel/club hammer are different and depend on the biome/color of the rock
Stones being hard to find is ridiculous. I can walk out the front of my house and find 500 stones within 15 paces.
