Fight with weapons. When a weapon resists taking damage to its durability, Maintenance gains exp. For that reason, durable weapons like the Crowbar are great to level maintenance.

It's also recommended to get a trait that gives maintenance at the start (like handy or wilderness knowledge). Note that Reluctant Fighter (I think that's the new name.. formerly known as Pacifist) affects Maintenance negatively, so it can be a fairly bad get if you intend to level maintenance.

I think it might be bugged, at least with some weapons. It definitely does not work with stomping any more and it does not seem to work with all manor of sticks even through they are labeled as weapons and I gained xp in weapons for hitting zds with them.

I got to Short Blunt 1 from 0 with an iron pipe, and got no maintenance XP at all.
Then I switched to my Emergency Knife(TM) and started gaining (still at a pretty slow rate: my Short Blade is at 1 but at least my Maintenance is halfway to level 1).
So far, knives and spears have gotten me maintenance XP. I just want that sweet sweet Stone Axe to cut down some trees.

(Fortunately, zombies drop Carving Forks like it's Thanksgiving, so I can just keep stabbing.)

Equip a weapon, stand in front of a door, then put something on your spacebar like a paperweight or something. Come back every so often to have your character eat or drink and then weigh down the spacebar again. Do not forget to equip a weapon or you will not gain exp, even a spoon will do. Also make sure it is a safe location or the noise will attract zombies.

From what I figured out, weapons that are 'improvised' like just a pipe, or random sticks and whatnot... those do NOT give maintenance exp. To get maintenance exp you need to use proper weapons like baseball bats, hammers, combat/kitchen knives, ...

The problem I have with this decision is that maintenance does not go up if you use "improvised" weapons. My question is, at what point does it stop being improvised? A metal baseball bat was never meant to be used as a weapon, it's sporting equipment. However we DO receive long blunt and maintenance while using it. Where do we draw the line? If you use the argument that it is essentially a club, my response is yes, but it's also technically a metal pipe that's sealed on both ends. So why would we get experience for using one but not the other when they're essentially the same thing?

With improvised weapons i'm talking more about stuff that should not be considered a weapon at all most of the times. Just asume that pipes, rods, sticks, musical instruments, garden rake, ... do not give maintenance. You can still use them as weapons, especially pipes, but they just won't give the maintenance exp.

How is crowbar not a weapon but kitchen knife is? neither is by design but can hurt, crowbar can hurt more.

In the real world, from a legal perspective, it becomes a weapon when there is intent to do malicious harm. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but THE MOMENT I pick up a crowbar in Project Zomboid...my heart is brimming with malicious intent.

Improvised weapons are weapons because we use them to cave in some zombie skulls. They should give weapon skill. That's my take on it, and I'm sticking to it.
