Project Zomboid

The quest for an axe/sledgehammer
I hit almost every shed in West Point, the hardware store, the factory, every mini mart, and drove down every road besides those going far out of town looking for an axe/woodaxe and a sledgehammer. Tried to get into storage sheds and garages without windows, but haven't found the sledge, and kind of hesitant to use propane, since I need that for welding. Finally found a wood axe in the dumpster behind Giga Mart. But it's on a shred of life. Been kind of blessed run otherwise, but this is going to be the most nerve-wracking repair ever. If I fail the repair, it's toast. I've got three in maintenance. I'm scared, boys.

Edit: I'm actually just out of luck eh, forgot you can't repair damage axe heads. Is there any way to salvage it?

We probably could reforge broken heads in the future, but not now.

For now, you can use stone axes instead if you really want to use them as weapons. They are much more durable than in b41. They are especially good once you hit level 4 maint and level 4 axe skills.

As for sledgehammers, they aren't that useful anymore now, outside of doing home decoration. There's almost no point in looking for them.

That'll be cool. I'd make a stone axe head, but I don't have the recipe. I think it takes a schematic, but would be happy to be wrong. I just wanted it to chop down trees. I've got hatchets galore, but don't want to break em. Found one firefighter axe too but seems a shame to use it on trees. Maybe I can use it to break down some more garage/storage doors and find another axe? Lol. Wanted to use it on zombies but I guess you work with what you've got

From my experience, the wood axe doesn't seem to lose durability when used to cut down trees, only sharpness, so as long as you only use it for trees you might get away with it.

That being said, did you just use the Fix interaction? Fixing only impacts the handle, but at the moment if you manually dismantle an item, it will break the handle but the head of the weapon will appear at 100% condition (Albeit dull, so will need sharpening). You can then attach it to a new handle and you should be back at 100% across the board.

I don't think this is an intended interaction, so it will probably change in future, and it might be inconsistent - But in my run I've been able to use it to salvage several damaged bits of equipment that I've pulled from dumpsters.

You sir.. are a genius. That worked. I've got a mod that lets me right click items to show what I can craft with it, and it works most of the time, but for w/e reason it wasn't showing the assemble/disassemble options. Does feel a little exploity, but eh, I worked hard for that dumpster axe, and ain't got time for hitting trees all day. I'll allow it this time. Heh.

Tip: You can break down a garage door with some melee weapon. A crowbar, fireaxe, or wood axe works great, just attack the door till it breaks. I've done it with hatchets too.

On a side note, anything with an edge (like even a kitchen knife) can be used to cut down a tree. Again, just attack it till it's "dead". I hope you brought a lot of knives though...

I found one Axe in a survivor home. What an amazing weapon.
Get yourself a vehicle and take a roadtrip to mccoys lumber. All the pre-cut logs you could wish for plus a fair chance of finding mccoys vans that often have axes in the bacl
Axes, normally find in Fire stations. (or on firemen & vehicles) I have found worn hatchets in dumpsters in Muldraugh near the medical centre. Can always visit there.

No, those are called Fire Axe now
There is an actual Axe, and it's a different weapon.

I went into carving-knapping path and boy large stone axes are great.
Regular or wood axes are just meh in comparison. I'm not talking about the default stone axe, they are decent. But the large one that is possible on level 3 knapping is beyond amazing.

It chops large trees in a few hits and I bet it would work great on Z too. Stats wise according to wiki it's something like 50% better than a fireaxe.

If you start with lvl1 knapping and foraging it's not terribly hard to reach level3 without books in a week or so.

There is also a way to create something called a "stone maul", but it doesn't work as a sledgehammer

Crude stone axes are pretty accessible.
The recipe has no skill or magazine requirements and takes a branch, a flint flake, and a rag as ingredients.
It's something you can craft on day one.
Stone hammers are similarly easy to make.

I've created 4 worlds so far in build 42, and primarily searched West Point as well and haven't found a single sledgehammer, or axe; with the exception of a nearly broken hand axe that was stuck in a zombies skull. I was sure the hardware store or the auto shop would, but nope. Lots of mufflers though.

Why would a car shop have a sledgehammer or axes?

Sometimes break rotors get stuck to the wheel hub. Same can happen with a wheel, a tap from the hammer can pop it off.
