Shooting zombies I'm not aiming at
Having a recurring issue where I am aiming at the closest zombie (highlighted in green) but I shoot a zombie further back in the crowd. This wastes ammo and has almost gotten me killed several times. Anyone else have this issue or know a way to avoid it?

Get better aim skill. Unless you are using the shotgun close range you will miss. A lot.

basically your character cant aim to save their life. so you have to train their aim.
I have noticed that my guns for some reason tend to prioritize targets further away. So if there are a whole lot of zombies behind one coming at me it will straight up ignore the one on me. I have had solo or tiny groups straight up come up to me and almost kill me outright because my gun would not fire at them and would just plink away at zombies a screen away. Really weird, tested this many times, seems to be a thing for some reason.

You likely hit the zombie but didn’t kill it, so the bullet passed to the zombies behind it in the same cone-shaped area the game targeted. You can hit up to 3 zombies at once with most guns.

Lower your skill, the less chance you will kill outright. You should see the zombie flinch slightly in this scenario.

I guess I should have added that I have 10 in aiming. Also no panic, I use beta blockers and I'm 4 months in. I will pay closer attention but I haven't noticed any flinching in these scenarios. I typically wait until the zombie is a few feet in front of me to shoot since it seems more reliable to 1 shot that way and it's a big problem when the bullet just phases through them to hit some other zed 20 feet away.

This is my exact issue. It makes no sense when the closest zombie has the green aim highlight. And it often happens for several shots in a row. Very dangerous.

There is a mod that changes the shooting system completely:

With this mod, you will be able to shoot zombies behind fences and tall fences...

same, i can be blasting a horde of zombies fine. oddly a few will be completely ignored while they get closer. no matter what i do i cannot hit the (1-5) zombies still closing in. if they get close enough that i push them to the ground i can easily shoot them.
also: its not that im missing them cause ill be hitting unhighlighted zombies behind them

Sounds like you missed them.

I have this issue too, it's weird but maybe we need to aim the cursor closer to the zombie that is at the front.

Depends a LOT on if you're using vanilla or modded guns. All gun mods have different stats for every gun, and vanilla guns have really wonky stats (you can hit an entire barn with a sawn-off shotgun because that's how the devs think shotguns work).

If you're using Arsenal/Brita's for example, you'll very often hit zombies that aren't even in your drawing distance because their guns have incredibly long max ranges especially at Aiming 10.

Other mods don't handle the MinAngle stat of their guns which can end up with you shooting a zombie way off to your side instead of the one directly in front of you.

Personally I think this one is way better
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3036878362&searchtext=advanced+trajectory

It gives you the much better gunplay involved with the mod without the drawbacks of now suddenly being able to headshot zombies flawlessly from Aiming Level 1.
It's not without its own drawbacks but it feels a lot more in-line with how the rest of the game works and it keeps guns from just being the best choice outright.
It also has a lot more interplay with the rest of the game's mechanics, namely moodles and whatnot.

I also personally use Guns of '93 as my weapon mod of choice and it statistically seems to be just right in terms of balance, without the bloat of Arsenal Gunfighter + Brita's.

In my playthrough I've had this happen depending on the gun I'm using. Shotguns and pistols always hit the closest highlighted zombies but rifles tend to favour zombies at mid-range and even off-screen even if a closer zombie is highlighted. Having a scope on the rifle could also be a factor. I am also using guns from the Vanilla Firearms Expansion mod which could play into it.

I have had this issue too, but mainly with modded guns. Sometimes it feels like if the "angle" of the gun is too broad, theres a chance the wrong zombie gets the bullet instead the one im highlighting, happened plenty times already so i know exactly what you are talking about.

I havent found any satisfying solutions yet. What i do is to edit the range of the gun shorter, and tighten the angle, so there really is no chance for the gun to hit a wrong zombie.

Since this got necro'd I'll add that I don't use modded guns and I noticed it mainly with the m14, which I didn't use until I was already at aiming 9. My guess is that with high aiming and a rifle the game favors a certain range, although in my experience point blank shots are always the most effective regardless of aiming skill or weapon.

It's mainly a problem because the green outline is not accurate. Thinking you're gonna kill the zed right in front of you and then whiffing completely can easily get you killed.
