Bite or just infection?

Regular infection can be treated with alcohol and clean bandage. Zombification takes 3 days to a week usually.

Clean the wound and bandage it.

There are two types of infection.
"Infected" shown on the health panel is a Wound infection; It just slows the pace of healing. This type of infection occurs when you don't change your bandages often enough; Clean and rebandage it and stay on top of changing your bandages.

There is also the "Knox infection", the one that zombifies and kills you. The game will never explicitly tell you when you have the knox infection. It won't appear in the health panel, your only hints are the telltale sickness/pain/fever/eventual death.

If it came from a bite, you have a few days tops. If its from a scratch or laceration caused by a zombie, you only have like a 20% chance of being infected with the zombie virus. You don't actually get any direct indicators telling you that you have been infected by the zombie virus, you'll just continue to slowly lose health and get increasing levels of sickness - much like if you eat poisoned food or catch a cold.

If its just an infection from leaving a bandage on too long, or a cutting yourself on a piece of glass/gravel - you don't really need to worry about it. You can't die from those types of infections. They just cause pain and make the wound take longer to heal.
7%/25%/100% for scratch/laceration/bite when it's from a zombie.

To add onto this the specific moodles and other hints you're looking out for that always guarantee that you're infected with the zombie virus are:
Anxious/agitated + queasy + your heart icon won't stop shaking violently even when you have nothing actually wrong with you that you can solve in the health status menu.
This combo ALWAYS means you're infected so people have come to dread seeing it, and it usually takes about a day for everything to fall into place and pop up although typically you see the anxiety one pop up first before any others, and you don't really gain stress from being in your house generally speaking so you might start worrying if you see that come up with no wound infection.

If you ARE infected in a wound though there are a few ways to disinfect your wounds, the most direct of course just being using a bottle of disinfectant, and as others have mentioned you can keep clean bandages on your wounds to ensure that you never get an infected wound anyways.
If you leave an infected wound to fester too long it can also kill you and you will turn into a zombie, but it's not actual zombie infection and takes far longer to actually kill you, usually a week or more where the zombie virus tends to kill you in 2 to 3 days.
However, much like real life, infected wounds aren't guaranteed death but they will always cause you severe pain and drastically increase your recovery timeframe.

Sidenote; You will also get anxiety from an infected wound so that on its own is never enough to tell if you're infected with the zombie virus, if you see a wound is infected when you have anxiety then you'd be better off waiting to see if queasy pops up out of nowhere before restarting or chugging bleach.

As a quick tip, you can boil a pot or saucepan of water in an oven or other method of cooking and then disinfect your ripped sheets/bandages/etc. which from what I was able to find looking into it makes you completely immune to wound infection for the duration of the bandage's life until it becomes dirty whereas you have a chance to get an infection even if you use a clean bandage right away.
Pretty sure you disinfect the wound directly if you want to clear it after getting it, disinfecting bandages is a more secure preemptive measure.
