project zomboid best way to train mechanics from 0
Ok, so I started off with 4 or 5 clunkers around a bar... very few zombies roamed and once I killed them I only had to worry about if meta events drew any from the nearby gas tation or burger joint... which only happened once in like 40 in game days.

Initially I was getting .5 experience per car by uninstalling and re installing the battery... I'd do this every day and it was stupid and tedius. Unfortunately, I did not ever find a car jack for tires.
Eventually, finally, I found a damn mechanics book and dove right into reading it. Now im actually seeing growth at 2 or 3 exp per install and uninstall.
but then I wanted to move to the lake cabin and check out that scene... grabbed a single car and loaded it up, then left. now i only have the one car to bug with... which is painfully slow.

Help, how do you guys train mechanics?

I don't know, if you are into mods, yet there is an "Auto Mechanics"-mod, which lets you char do everything he can provided the tools for it, so it eases at least the amount of playing Project Cookie Clicker. Mechanics will always be tougher to lvl without any basic bonus though, so you just can take it as an exercise in patience.

GL. :)

Find 1 working vehicle. Start towing multiple others to your base or any place where you can safely work on them. Next is start removing and adding lamps to the vehicles. After lamps move to the next best thing you have skill for. Personally i like to start with mechanic profession in order to not suffer through early levels, also you can easy hotwire cars after leveling electricity to 1 with digital watches and radios.

ALWAYS read the mechanic skill books.

Otherwise for my world I did the windows. (Front, and rear) windows and even front screen and doors.
Even if it failed you earned some XP thanks to the book and you can continiously keep taking them off and on.

I only did this to get to Mechanic 2 for hotwiring, for higher levels I'd recommend a guide.
It only took like an ingame day to get to 2 from 0 without any XP multiplier aside from fast learner.

Plus there might be better ways, but that's what I did to "brute force my way to level 2."

If you really want to raise mechanic, have amateur mechanic for the +300% exp boost. Read beginners, grind the second skill point (this is actually the worst part and pretty tame with both boosts)
Now read intermediate and then watch Car Zone 1. This will actually take you to level 4 or very close. Read Advanced, Watch Car Zone 2+3. Congrats, you are now level 6 and can work on all heavy duty and standard vehicles and once you've read Expert and worked on a few cars, you'll hit 7 and unlock the last sports cars pieces

Position the vehicles as you would if you were going to tow them. Stand between them where the tow hitch would be, press V, you should see a plus sign in the vehicle menu if everything is positioned. Click the + and they hook up.

ya, for anyone else who sees this post. uninstalling headlamps, the radio, AND the battery... and re installing them... are a great way to train early mechanics. I just jumped over 10 points from doing this to two cars. way better than the 3-6 points a day I was getting before.
