Project Zomboid

Is that even possible to find a driveble car?
I remember back when cars came out, you could find a key somewhere near a car. Now cars are either totally broken or in the best shape. You even can find a fine car with all locks broken. but you won't find any key, either on a corpse, or in a house, or trunk, or glove compartment, or on the seats (how it was supposed to be). So it fells strange to find a locked car, to search a nearby house, to kill every person and to Not find any damn key.
It happens every time. Well, I think one time I finally grabbed the steering whell, but the engine was half-dead and no fuel at all, so it was part-success.
So I'm convinced that cars are mid-game feature now, when you established your base of operations only by foot-work, have read all the necessary books and manuals, hoarded all the resources. And you just CAN'T use any car out where without can of gazoline, proper tools and skills. So trying to acquire a car is a waste of time. Foot-work first, cars later. Am I right? Please, share with your experience. I'm trying to play on the Apocalypse and my character isn't Burglar or Mechanic.

You can also sometimes find them on the ground within some distance of the car, particularly when you're *crouched* while in foraging mode as crouching gives you a better chance of finding items. Lastly, I've found them on a zombie killed near the car (I'm not sure if you can kill a zombie near a car and have a change of them holding the key, like you can with killing zombies in a house to get a house key?) and either on corpses or in drawers within a house when the car the key belongs to is parked in the house's driveway.

Alternatively you could start as a the burglar profession - who can hot-wire cars from the beginning - or just grind two level of mechanical and one level of electrical on any character to be able to hotwire any car.

It's luck. A good car with a good trunk could spawn right next to your spawn point if you're lucky. I wouldn't bother with checking neighborhoods so much but business parking lots are decent spots to find a working one with keys.

If you loathe it enough to could always take burglar or whatever and just take whatever car you want.

I had the same thing happen somewhat in my recent playthrough. Explored over half of rosewood and no working cars with keys. I check the firestation and boom 3 cars all in good condition two of which had keys for.

Don't forget to look if the key is not already in the starter, this where i find most of them.

That and check every container and every drawer. I found a key in the Rosewood business/apartment complex in a random container in a restaurant business. Search everything even the containers like desks that usually have garbage loot.

I've also found keys on the ground outside the car a few times.

On that note I have heard that you could find a car key while walking around a car checking the ground. Have never seen it but does make a bit a sense that someone could have dropped their keys for whatever reason right by the car.

where you in foraging mode while you searched? cos that's how you find them. I've found a few that way. Crouching while foraging helps too.

Nope saw it without it never used foraging mode. Was the case before foraging mode and I haven't bothered using it to see if it changes anything.

No foraging necessary. While foraging it will point it out to you, but you can also leave your loot window open and on the ground container as well. They will show up in there if they are nearby.

this is very interesting, I've noticed the Foraging feature of course, but never thought to use it like this. thank you very much! so I understand that you could find a key after all, maybe just less often then in earlier build.

the weak spot of the game is that tutorial covers just a bit. I'm like new player, because haven't played a while. many features aren't clear.

Yesterday we started a new online game and I spawned with the keys to the car that was right in front of my house. So yeah it's possible to find a drivable car :)
